I am using Linux RH 6.0 at work in a skunk works project (IT does not know I
have the boxes running). The IT department is diehard M$ and all ip addresses
are doled out by DHCP. My trouble is that the only way I can get an ip from
the DHCP server is by using "localhost.localdomain" as the hostname. I then
get back a different machine name every week or so, i.e pc89987.mycompany.com.
However this same hardware when it was running W95 would get the same machine
name every time it did a DCHP ip request i.e. mymachine.mycompany.com. How do
I configure Linux to always request mymachine.mycompany.com and not get errors
like I am now? Only localhost.localdomain works for me and I get named
pc####.mycompany.com every time without a guarenteed same hostname.

You can create an ext2 filesystem on the partition and mount wherever you
want. With an entry in your /etc/fstab it will mount every time you boot.

The Linux Firewall-HOWTO has good information on IP Filtering Firewalls and
Proxy Servers and some of the different software.

Subject: Problem with Linksys 10/100 on 2.0.36 w/Slackware 3.6 Distro
Date: Wed, 18 Aug 1999 02:12:43 GMT

Hi All.

I have a slight problem. In the process of upgrading my network from 10Mbit
to 100Mbit, I upgraded the NE2000 ISA network card in my Linux box to a
Linksys 10/100 (LNE100TX v2.0) PCI card. I downloaded the modified tulip.c
driver from Linksys's website and compiled it into the kernel. That went
great. I reboot the kernel and the driver finds the card at IRQ 11 at some
32-bit I/O address.

This is where my problems begin.

The instant my rc.inet1 runs and brings up the card (eth0) with ifconfig,
the NIC goes haywire. I can see on my hub that the link LED goes up and
down, up and down at about a 1/2 second rate. The lights on the NIC blink
crazily. So I "ifconfig eth0 down" and the NIC goes back to normal with the
LED on the hub showing a steady link-LED.

Very strange I thought. But here's the funny part. What I just described
above was the 2nd time I rebooted. The first time I rebooted with the new
kernel, the same thing above happened. But after 30 seconds, the link-LED
went solid and the NIC worked flawlessly. Now anytime I do a cold-boot,
warm-boot, kill the power and turn the machine back on... the NIC just stays
crazy.

Things I have checked and found okay:

#1. Bad cable. (Swapped with known good cable.)
#2. Bad NIC. (Swapped with known good NIC.)
#3. Bad port on hub. (Switched to a known good port on hub.)
#4. Bad hub. (It's a Linksys 16-port 10/100. The other machines like it
=)

More information:

This is on a Compaq Presario. About 2 years old. P5-233MMX. I've disabled
PnP in the BIOS (If I didn't the tulip driver found my NIC at IRQ 255 ;).
Anyone else have ideas on how to fix this? If you need more info, let me
know.

Thanks in advance!

-Dan

Subject: Re: Where do I begin?
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 01:02:58 GMT

1. Linux on a P90 with 16MB RAM is doable, but I would up the RAM to
at least 32 Megs. That shouldn't be too expensive. Considering the
number of workstations you are planning on connecting to the Linux
box, you should be OK. Obviously, the more the RAM, the happier the
Linux.

2. You didn't mention disk space. A 5 Gig drive should be a good
starting point if you are planning on doing MILD file serving. Then
again, it might not be enough. I imagine you can come up with an
estimate. Just remember, a *full* installation of a Linux
distribution like Caldera's OpenLinux 2.2 will take almost 1.5 Gigs...
just the software...

3. I'm an Outlook user. What you are asking about is very doable.

First, I don't know how much calendaring you are interested in doing,
but I know that you can set up Outlook to store each user's Free/Busy
information on a common subdirectory that everyone can have access to.
So, you can, as a minimum, schedule meetings and things like that and
have the latest Free/Busy information for everyone. I do it on my
system.

Second, Outlook allows you to open multiple Personal Folders (.pst)
files concurrently (obviously, limited by memory). In theory (because
I haven't done it myself) you could create a .pst file with just
contact (or, hey! calendar) information, put it out on a common
subdirectory, and have people open that file along with their default
Outlook file (outlook.pst).

4. It sounds like, at least initially, you want a Linux box to
provide you with file serving services. And Linux can do that very,
very, well. Just check into something called SAMBA, which allows
Linux to emulate NT file and printing services.

5. I don't know anything about Notes R5, but do know something about
the current releases. It is hard, VERY HARD to love a Notes
installation. We have Notes at work and we are less than impressed
with it. You might want to check into that first. Also, Notes will
most likely have a considerably higher initial hardware requirement
than even a souped up Linux box. And since you guys are non-profit...

6. Don't let the cost of Linux (essentially free) fool you, please.
The OS is free, support is free, and most of the software is free (and
all three are of pretty good quality). But if you are going to use
the Linux box in a real-world production environment you need to take
into consideration a back-up system, UPS, etc. It's going to cost you
something.

7. Finally, the learning curve is rather high. I started very
recently and have had to put in quite a few hours to get my systems
(2) going the way I want them. Most of the instructions you receive
are very good (like the collection of HOW-TOs), but they still require
you to have an OK level of knowledge about computers and, especially,
UNIX-like systems. Getting a couple of books would be a good idea.
"Linux in a nutshell" is almost mandatory. Another one, "Running
Linux" is also highly recommended, although dated (so is the nutshell
book, by the way). However, O'Reilly is coming out with a new edition
this month, so you might want to wait.

Good luck!

If even after changing irq's it does not automatically recognize both the
cards, and it is a EISA card, then try adding
in the lilo.conf the append statement (A sample one below)
append="reserve=0x240,32 ether=5,0x240,eth1"
and reloading lilo and restarting the system
if that also doesn't work(i don't find any reason for it) then we can try
conf.modules to load it as a module

hope it helps

I also suspect its arp, but it's not *my* arp table that can cause a
problem, it's the gateway's arp table. I suspect that for some reason,
either the gateway is not sending the arp request properly, or I'm not
responding to it properly. I guess some packet sniffing is in order.

Of course I could just have crond ping somebody every 10 minutes, but
I'd like to know what's really going on...

Owned by a group? That makes no sense. Make pppd suid root, in group
pppusers, and executable by the group, like this:

-rwsr-x--- 1 root pppusers 126256 Aug 11 20:20 /usr/sbin/pppd

I would be surprised if Mandrake did not ship pppd already set up like
this (though the group might have been something like 'dip').

I'm in the same situation. I'm trying to setup a masquerading dail out

to our ISP via modem. I have the DNS server working but the firewall and
masquerading are not. What programs are required for masquerading? I
have the firewall using ipchains. I'm not sure if I have the rc.firewall

Try re-compiling your kernel without making the NIC modular. On some
(all?) NICs, making them modular won't work. I've got mine permanent
(and after all, I'm using them all the time anyway) and it's working
fine compiled in. I'm using PCI-based NE2000 clones.

Maybe because you didn't read the Linux-Sound how-to's.

This is not an error message. Your machine tries to negotiate the link
level with the server, and this package is simply the configuration your
machine would like to use. The problem is somewhere else. maybe a bit
more of your /var/log/messages with proper logging would help.

Subject: Ignorance On Parade!--The Samba Years!
Date: 17 Aug 1999 20:43:25 PDT

Well, anyway, it seems like years that I've been trying to get Samba to work
right. I'm getting close, but...

I've upgraded to Samba 2.0.3 and RedHat 6.0. I have gotten it to the point
where Samba runs and I can see an icon for my Linux machine when I open
Network Neighborhood in Windows. But when I click on this icon, I get a
deuced unpleasant response, telling me that the computer or sharename is not
available.

I'm almost there...can somebody help me over this last hump? Thanks.

Ok for one thing you will have static IP adresses on your side of the
network !!!

The ISP assigned Ip does not matter on the local network.
One other thing make sure your default route on the linux box is set to the
static IP adress on your parents PC.

if it still doesn't work I would look at your linux IP setup !!

hope it helps !

Subject: PPPD and ioctl(PPPIOCGUNIT):Operation Not Permitted
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 23:14:14 -0400

Hello All,

I'm having problems setting up my PPP connection and have searched the
web regarding this error. What I have found on the net is that for most
people this is a permission problem on their pppd and scripts calling pppd
not being set with the suid bit. However, in my case, I've checked by
ppp-go, ppp-off, and pppd scripts and all have the suid bit set, and I'm
trying to run it as root and I still get the Operation Not Permitted error
message. Currently I'm running Linux 2.2.6 and pppd 2.3. I think I'm
going to try and upgrade PPP to the latest version and see if it helps. If
any of you have run into this problem, any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanx,
Sean
