I have a small quirk w/ samba.

I'm have my computer connected to a small lan at home(3 computers) and
dial into my ISP to check mail and such..

Now whenever I have a ppp session active I can stop, start, and restart
smbd and nmbd, however once I disconnect the ppp session nmbd refuses to
start.

The only things I can think of are:

1) that nmbd might need info from bootp, dhcp, or dns avaiable to
provide it with netbios name info, which my small home lan doesn't have,
but is present when I'm connected to my ISP.

2) that I need to specify which interface to use, eth0 as opposed to
ppp0 - then see what I can do about providing so basic netbios info,
maybe threw lmhosts or by setting up a bootp or dhcp server at my home
lan???

Below is a check of smb with a active ppp session, note that the
interface, bcast, and nmask values are all match whats listed under ppp0
info supplied by ifconfig

This is pretty strange, since in the DHCP protocoll it wil ask your cleint to
update it existence after ttl/2
if your clients replies that he still is there the lease will be extended.
What could be the problem is when your system doesn't keep updating (so your
dhclient doesn't stay in the background), or that your system is off and that
your lease will get expired and will be send to another server.

But you can ofcourse ask your administrators to add your MAC address to the dhcp
scope so it will remain "static". My idea is that server should never be dealt IP
addresses from DHCP servers since they can change from time to time.

If your admin is a true admin he will help you to solve your problem, when you
need a steady IP address then you will need one and they should give it to you.
If they do not then they don't know .... about there job.
But always be nice!

The PRoblem is the encrypted password

under NT 4 i got (in the registry) the HLM/System/CCS/Services/RdR
"EnablePlainTextPassword" DWORD 1

in WIN2000 i got no idea where to put it, so that i can connect to LINUX

This is still in the kernel!

Perhaps you use a old 2.0.x kernel config to build a new 2.2.x kernel?
Becaus ethat will have the effect of lossing some parameters. You should rebuild
the whole config once.
And perhaps this code is still experimental (would'nt know why), but then you
should enable the experimental parameter.

Tell us something about the NIS+-server you are using.
What errors did you receive , etc. ... ?
Maybe then we can help.

Why should you wanna do that?!

A firewall should always be subnetted to make it save! Otherwise sniffers can
do there work when they force into your firewall.

In the cisco this feature is build in to apply loadbalancing over 2 nic's.
Specially the serial since the bandwidth is relativaly small.

Maybe an update of your wu-ftp for RH6 might help.
You can find it on any RH mirrors under updates.
Watch the errata page of RH for wu-ftp errors and updates.

Ethernet-HOWTO <http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html>

This lists the supported status of lots of NIC's from cheap to expensive (not
ordered in that manner, however). Go to www.pricewatch.com to compare what
you find to what you can afford.

I picked up all my network cards (Dec 205/3Com 3c509/LinkSys) for $15-30 bucks
each second hand. I'd stick with 10/100 base-T, mainly because if you know
how to crimp ethernet, it's easier to do cat5 than coax, IMHO.

The only thing that works is diald

This is pretty tricky since you have to create a ppp session by hand. And
supply pap-secrets and ppp.options etc.

But it will work, it took me about 8 hours but than it's done and will
work!

wvdial doesn't support dial on demand yet, I would hope they implment that
fast that would make it a whole lot easier.

Seems like a problem on your Windows 98 PC. Does it have a sleep modus>?<
Otherwise you should diable that power down modus, since then it will not
react upon network interrupts and so the X-server will think that the
system has crashed when the Win98 box will not reply within the watchdog
period. And then X will kill those open tasks.

You can also enable encrypted passwords in your smb.conf
Afterwards you have to create a smb encrypted passwordaccount with the
following statement

To enable encrypted password in your samba add the following line to your
[global] definition
encrypt passwords = yes

smbpasswd -a username

Now that will do the trick. ANother plus is also that you can change your
password from the client and your password is secure against sniffers on your
Local network.

He, how does Win 2000 go? Is it more stable and are the TerminalServer services
standard?

His question was howto span ext2 volumes.
I would like to know this asswell you know how.

I know that there are certain tools but I can't remember their names. If you
have that tools you can cluster the inode tables together to make 1 big
volume

It seems that your chat is empty or corrupted whatever.
This is the file that the dialdconfiguration file will issue.

Does the NT DHCP server have a default gateway in it's scope?
AT least DNS, Default Gateway and domain name will work.
WINS won't since M$ has added that themselves.
Now I know that there is a problem with the default dhclient in RH6.0 it was
patched so perhaps you should get the patched version (Or drop REDNECK and buy
SuSE ;-)

Well tell your friend it isn't called http-redirection, but a virtual
server.

You can add a virtual server to your apache by edittingt the httpd.conf
file.
Down on the end they will show you howto do it.

If you can't get it to work (it's a bit tricky but not that hard), drop me
an email and I will tell you in detail.

Hello I`ve got the same problem using two NE2000 pci clones.
I have them compiled in the kernel But they still won`t work together.
At startup no delayes or failing messages.

Can annyone shed another light on this matter maybe?
