It's possible, with Linux/m68k, if the 630 has a FPU and the ethernet
cards are one of the suypported brands of NS8390 based cards...
(BTW: the proper newsgroup is c.o.l.m68k)

My NE2000 card has 3 settings jumperless, autodetect and plug-n-play. I have
tried jumperless and autodetect and still no luck finding the card with
Redhat 5.2. From the RedHat site FAQ I tried:
insmod 8390
insmod ne io=0x0280 irq=11
Got back:
ne.c: No NE*000 card found at i/o = 0x280
/lib/modules/preferred/net/ne.0 : init_module: Device or resource busy
These were the IO and IRQ reported under Win98 where it works fine in
autodetect or PnP (gone in jumperless)
I also have a SoundBlaster 32 card that isn't found - could these two cards
be conflicting?
Thanks for any advice!

DNS != WINS.
A WINS name can't be used for pinging. You need some way to get the WINS
name registered with the DNS. I'm using Samba as my WINS server, and an
NT3.51 system as the DHCP server. I'm thinking of writing a script to
periodically move names from the nmbd (Samba WINS) database to a zone
include file for named, and HUP-ing named to make it see the new zone
file. Haven't got around to it, but perhaps someone has already done
this.

I am running a Realtek-8139 NIC in my Linux machine. At bootup it
cannot find the NICs. It says somthing like "delaying eth0
initalization". So once it's booted up I do a 'insmod rtl8139'
followed by some other ifconfig stuff and what not.
How can I get Linux to find the NICs at boot time?

They should stack, with the newest one taking precedence. This is so
that you can have transient connections (like dial-ups) temporarily take
over the default route for the life of the connection, and restore it
when the dial-up disconnects.

Say an ISP is looking for a one-computer solution. The computer will handle
Main website, user websites, DNS server, mail server (no newsgroups), and
FTP server for users only --- no anonymous.
Computer specifications:
=========================
Dual Intel Pentium II 450
1GB RAM
WD 18GB UW-SCSI Harddrive
8MB AGP Video
UW-SCSI CDROM
12GB Tape Backup
1.44 Floppy
SB 16 PNP Sound
Linksys 10/100 NIC
Server Case (6-10 Fans)
Network Bandwitdth:
=========================
24/7 Full T3
Should it be NT or Linux? Why?
==============================
Consider the following:
- Ease of maintence
- Speed
- Reliability
- GUI?
- Cost
- Heat
- Support
- Ease of installation
- Compatibility
- Down-time situation
This is a real situation. Any response will be appreciated. Thank you.

You are talking about CSU/DSU! As far as replacing the router and talking
directly to CSU/DSU, it's probably possible, but I'm not an expert in that.
I know there are some hardware devices (internal cards) that will allow you
to replace your whole current setup with Linux box, but they are not free.
Good luck!

The Message-ID: line does say something different each time, and does
have my server's name included in the message, so it can't possibly
be a repeat of that ID from someone else's message, only from our
server, and I'm the only one trying to post messages in our company,
and none of them have gotten through.
The following is the debug when fetch is run with fetch -vvvv.
9754-934970872-1 already available upstream
When it is run normally, similar output in /var/messages looks like :
Aug 20 11:00:04 myserver fetch[28948]: Message-ID of 28920-935117792-1 already in use
upstream -- article discarded
The thing of interest here though, is that it doesn't seem to be
looking at the "Message-ID" field in the message (which looks like
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]"), but rather the name of the saved
file (9754-934970872-1).
Shouldn't it be looking at Message-ID field, rather than the file name
to determine the repeating of articles ?
Something else which may be of interest. The upstream server isn't
running a standard news server.

Hi, I just installed Mandrake 6 on my computer which has a D-Link DFE-530TX
NIC for @home service. During installation I was asked whether I want to
set up networking. I answered yes then I chose "via rhine." The
installation then says that it can not detect the device anywhere on my
computer. How should I go about setting up my NIC. I have downloaded the
via-rhine.c file if that's needed. But seeing that Mandrake actually
supports via rhine is there an easy way to set up my system so I can get
back on the net thru @home?
Please be as detailed as you can be when answering as I am NEW to linux.
Thanks a lot in advance!

Subject: NTP compatibility with linux?

I am running Red Hat 6.0 -- I am trying to use ntpdate to set the time
and date over a network. The ntp server is running Solaris 2.5.1 I
believe.
I can't get the ntpdate to accept the other date. I simply get
ntpdate: no server suitable for synchronization found
I'm obviously a novice at NTP, but I can't find any info, and right now
I'm worried that there is some incompatibility with the time/date format
with Linux so it won't run.
I've read the man pages for ntpdate... nothing about troubleshooting...
if anyone's got any suggestions I'd love to hear them.
TIA,

my point here is that I can run rpcinfo from the client and get the

Subject: Re: what does MS dial up networking do that PPP doesn't ?
Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 22:35:52 -0600
Cameron,
One thing that the DUN (Dial Up Networking) adapter does default to is
PAP user authentication. You don't have to explicitly invoke it, but
you can explicitly invoke other types of user authentication when using
the DUN adapter.
It is unwise to persist in the belief that there is somehow "more" in
the DUN connection sequence than in what is possible or available in
Linux. I would remind you that there was an internet and PPP
connectivity long before Win95 even existed.
Now, it is vital to know what type of user authentication is used at the
service where you wish to connect. At most ISPs one would expect them
to know. However, with the proliferation of windoz everywhere, we are
now seeing people in charge who simply don't have a clue regarding their
own service. I can tell you that you should attempt to log onto that
service, and specify PAP user authentication.
Another point: It would appear that these Win types who are in charge
are sufficiently clueless as to not have configured scripting as part of
the connection process. I would therefore attempt to connect to that
service without the benefit of connections scripts. If they don't know
what connection script may be in use, it would be useless for you to
attempt to create one for the purpose of connecting.
More importantly that all the above, however, is the fact that you CAN
go into the control panel of windoz, networking, and see EXACTLY what
the configuration settings are. You can then go to your DUN icon, right
click it to get to it's properties as well. Therefore, if there are
scripts in use, or other types of authentication, YOU can know without
the benefit of the idiots at the service.
Good Luck

One other thing I might mention. I don't have rpc.yppasswdd running. I

Is this essential, and if so were do I get the program?

=interesting.groups directory? Is this a cross posting, or just to a
=single group?
out.going has a single file in it, in this case called 9754-934970872-1
before running fetch, and is empty after.
failed.postings is always empty.
Yes, the group is in my interesting.groups directory.
It's to a single group, not a cross posting.
Thanks for helping.

Subject: Linuxconf, loopback not working, access to internet though.
Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 01:42:07 -0400
I set up linux networking using linuxconf in KDE. Set the machines IP,
Gateway, Subnet Mask and everything else I thought I needed to get access to
the net. Got access through the router working fine. My problem is, I can't
get the loopback to work. During boot, I get a good initialization on eth0
and lo (the loopback i think), but whenever I try to browse to localhost, I
keep pulling up http://www.localhost.com . Using Linuxconf, can anyone tell
me what I might be missing?
Some of the things that might help (i'm not at the machine now).
I keep getting a ServerName error on boot. saying i need to set it with
ServerName. Well, there IS no ServerName/servername/SERVERNAME :)
Any help is Greatly appreciated.
