Last night, after I wrote that question, I was looking at various FAQs. I
used the command 'modprobe eth1' and it magically worked. Thanks anyway.

If the tcp/udp ports required are known, there are various port-based
redirections available for IP masq'd networks. I've got ipportfw to
send all tcp/80 connections from my Ip masquerading gateway to my
webserver on my private intranet. Also, I believe there is something
to send all incoming connections to another machine, but I don't know
what it is.

You need to look at
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/misc/multicard.html
That's the official Multiple Ethernet FAQ. Also, some of that info
is in the Net-3 Howto.
Beware if anyone tells you to use an append= line in your lilo.conf.
That's only good if you don't use modules.

Hallo!
We use in aour LAN an Pentium 133 (32 MB) with Linux as our router and
proxy for 30 windows 95 computers. The perfomance is very well. Now we
want to use 90 computers with the same router. Does anybody know,
whether we have to expect performance-problems?
Thanks for the help!

I would like to apologize for offending anyone in the group. My purpose
was not too p*ss anybody off. It was to speak w/ some Linux users about
a project I would like to start. The problem is that I need people w/
experience running Linux in a production environment and I did not want
people responding who do not have this experience. There are many
reasons why this experience is important that I will not go into at this
time.
As for anyone who believes that I am an ego maniac, you obviously do not
know me. I will be the first to admit my lack of Linux skills.

Subject: dhcpd problem
Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 14:07:16 GMT
Hi everyone,
I just compiled the dhcp client for my machine, but can't start it.
Wen I run 'dhcpd',
in /var/log/messages:
Feb 24 12:16:19 localhost modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-17
Feb 24 12:16:19 localhost dhcpcd[435]: dhcpStart: socket: Invalid argument
I created the file, /etc/conf/modules with the content:
alias net-pf-3 off
alias net-pf-4 off
alias net-pf-5 off
alias net-pf-17 af_packet
But if I run modprobe -c, the output is:
# This file was generated by: modprobe -c (2.1.85)
...(some stuff)
# Aliases
alias net-pf-17 af_packet
alias net-pf-5 off
alias net-pf-4 off
alias net-pf-3 off
(some more stuff)...
> then later in the same output:
alias net-pf-1 unix
alias net-pf-2 ipv4
alias net-pf-3 off
alias net-pf-4 ipx
alias net-pf-5 appletalk
...
So apparently it does read the config file, but later it overwrites it with
its default stuff. Although I'm not sure about it, because it still logs the
above error messages when I try to run 'dhcpcd'.
I tried to kill and re-start 'kerneld' and even rebooting the system, nothing
helped. Any idea would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Akos

Hi
I think your routing table has either no entries or the wrong ones. You can
check it with
netstat -rn
You may have to enter new routes e.g. with the "route" command (route add -net
.....).
Hope this helps

Anyone know how to change the duplex setting on an ethernet device from
full duplex to half? Is there a 'generic' solution, or is it specific to
the kernel and device?
Thanks,

Ah yes... dorm life...
The simplest solution to that might be to get a hub and connect through
that. however, you should check with your network admin about it
first... my friend got his port disconnected temporarily for that :-(
with IP masq, you probably wouldn't get in trouble with the admin (maybe
the admins here are just jerks... I dunno). since you are connecting
more than one machine to your internal network, you'll still need the
hub and standard cat-5 cables. You should read the IP-Masq-HOWTO for the
details.
have fun :-)

same problem since 1.9
login works with 98
but where guest is allowed, it works
ie the status shows that guest is loggued, and not the ID i accessed
funny enough, my home is still accessible ie i acces my luc directory,
and my friends richard sees its richard one.
ive tried with both encrypted, or without.
same result, ie login says : wrong password (for the shares that deny
guest)
when i smbclient from the server, logged as luc, i can access the
guest allowed shared, and status shows my id (luc), not guest.
but even with smbclient , i cant access the shares that deny guest
ive tried 1.9.18, 2.0, 2.0.
hope u can help

Well, its me. I've succeeded - thanks to help from Roggie Boone
at the Univeristy of Georgia (along with the Caldera stuff).
Just so anyone who cares can find it in the future, here's what I did:
(Remember - this is using Debian - YMMV with other distros)
(ALSO!!! NOTE - I DO NOT KNOW how much of what I did was needed!
I may NOT have needed all the stuff I installed!)
download all the files on the caldera web site (to be precise, I got:
ipx-1.0-9.i386.rpm netware-4.10b-28.i386.rpm
ipxripd-0.7-4.i386.rpm netware-sysvol-4.10b-15.i386.rpm
linux-kernel-binary-2.0.35-1.i386.rpm nwclient-4.1.6-4.i386.rpm
linux-kernel-build-2.0.35-1.i386.rpm pserver-4.10.1-9.i386.rpm
from:
http://www.calderasystems.com/products/netware/download.html)
I installed all but pserver, netware-sysvol, and linux-kernel-binary - I could
not get netware-sysvol to install because it kept running out of memory while
stripping something. (If someone is interested in chasing this one down, email
me and I'll send better info), and I did not do pserver yet because I got it
working before I reached it..
Anyway - I also installed ncpfs-2.2.0 (I forget where from), and compiled
my kernel (the kernel build above, 2.0.35). After rebooting (and much
gnashing of teeth ;-), I did the following (in a script):
#!/bin/bash
/sbin/ipx_configure --auto_interface=on --auto_primary=on
sleep 2 # sorry, but it takes a moment for the above to do its thing...
ncpmount -S SERVER1 -U who_me -P 'no_way' /netware1
ncpmount -S SERVER2 -U who_me -P 'no_way' /netware2
and, LO, it worked. if you do 'slist' you should be able to see all the
netware servers.
Note - this is NOT doing service yet, nor do I have printing working
yet - thats tomorrows task ;-)
