Subject: Qseeme, please help!

Hi!

I'm having trouble getting qseeme (v0.83b) to work. The application
starts ok
but any connection I try is failing. My Linux 2.2.10 box is on a private
network and I
have a sync ISDN PPP connection to my ISP. I use ipchains to avoid
connections
from outside (is that the problem?).

I have all the masquerading stuff set up (works fine for other IP
services) and
the ip_masq_cuseeme kernel module is propery loaded.

I'm fairly experienced with Linux and IP networking but new to CuSeeMe.

1) Should I start qseeme with -l option? (what argument in that case)

2) Are there any specific IP port numbers that must be open for
connections
   from outside?

Many thanks in advance for any kind of help,

Can you ping the router itself? The fact that you have no Rx packets may
be due to some strange problem with your ethernet card.

If not then can you ping another machine on the network?

If so then you will need to check the firewall policy on the ip masq
router to see if you are allowed access - depends how this has been
configured it could be on a per machine basis.

Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 07:53:37 GMT

Hi.
I want in our Intranet to use Netmeeting.
In Microsoft architecture, Netmeeting use an LDAP service called ILS
(Internet Locator Service) to find all peaple connected actually to the
Network.
But my server is a Linux server and I want to know if I can find a service
like "ILS" running on LINUX.

Can someone give me a good site where I can find softwares to build an
Intranet with LINUX. I want services running on LINUX but with MS Windows NT
Workstation for the clients (Word,Outlook,Netmeeting,IE4 or Netscape)

Can some tell me if is there a good Mail server on LINUX that give a good
integration with MS OUTLOOK for the client side. (Not MS Outlook Express).

Many thanks in advance.

hello,

thanks for your advise but eeeh,
stil no luck. i`ve tried both ways and all different gateways on the x.2
machine.
It will only set up routing using x.1 so that must be right.

It still will ping eth0 and eth1 but won`t reach annything else.....:(

anny help options or suggestions left????

Subject: Re: Faster Internet Connection

A consumer ISDN (2B+D) in my area varies from about $35 to $40 a month. A
dedicated ISDN (dual channel too) to most ISPs in the area is around
$175/month. A simple dial-up ISDN is about $35/month for both channels and
$19.95/month for one channel.

Cable Internet is about $40/month in my area. (One IP address -- it's about
$10/month for each additional IP address... HOWEVER, I just use NAT at home
and do IP masquerading. It works great for me -- I've got six machines all
on the net for the price of "one." :) )

ADSL should be neat when it comes out in my area. The local telephone
company was going to offer it for $60/month -- then that would replace your
normal telephone line. (It would have three channels --
voice/upstream/downstream) With deregulation as it is in my state, I should
be able to purchase an ADSL line from the telephone company for something
like $40/month (I'm guessing on that one) and then purchase Internet access
from a local ISP that supports ADSL. (Which really shouldn't be too tough as
long as they are digital coming in) I'm looking forward to it when it comes
out.

Of course, the big cost issues might be at the time of purchase of the ISDN
terminal adapter and the installation of the line. Monthly charges aren't
much -- but installation of cable/ADSL/ISDN (even if there isn't any
installation, the terminal adapter will cost a bit) are a bigger chunk at
one time, usually.

I hope that helps a little.

All the best --
Ted

Hi,

I've got a big problem. Since three days I tried to build up a network. I've
got two machines at home. On the machine works SuSE Linux 6.1 and on the
other Win NT4 SP3. I want the Linux machine to become a file server. I
installed and configured the samba package and at the NT machine I have
access to the shares from the Linux machine.
My first and main problem is that I don't have any write access although I
configured my smb.conf with "read only = no" and "writeable = yes". I tried
everything: Read the man pages, howtos, look for information in the net, but
nothing work...
My second problem is that I don't see the Linux machine in the NT network
neighborhood.

PLEASE HELP before I go crazy...

Thanks

Just curious as to what transfer rates are people seeing on RH6 systems.

I got only 80kbps between two Linux systems on a ftp transfer of a 200MB
file.
I reckon that's a bit slow.

It's a 10Mbps ethernet, one system has an SMC card, the other
an Intel ether express.

True enough. However, since programs like Wingate and Sygate handle
this situation out of the box without requiring any changes in the
way Windoze handles name resolution, this implies there should be a way
to do it with diald if one can only conjure up the necessary mystical
incantations.

My own experiences with this indicate that if you have a network
of Linux machines, diald will probably work just great. However,
after uncounted hours of research and head-pounding I finally gave
up trying to get it to work on our Windoze network. It's a more
effective use of my time to just reboot the Wingate box when necessary,
at least until we get a full-time connection to the Net and no longer
have to worry about dialing issues.

It always takes more work to deal with something than to ignore it.

I'm not sure I follow you, but I don't think this has anything to do
with the language. In C, there is no notion of a 'handler', is there?

Yes, it is a royal pain in the ass to religiously check for everything
that might go wrong with everything that you do. _In_any_language_

It seems to be reality that you are upset with, not any particular
language. :)

These things can all easily be solved if they bother you. If you don't
like fwrite or putc, don't use them. Make your own functions that always
check these things and call them. But you'll find that it's hard to make
them, because what you do in case of the errors varies with how you are
using the functions. You really do have to do one of two things:

        1) Ignore the error cases and hope for the best, or

        2) Consider every possible error case at every step and code the right
behavior.

Now, you can do either in C or C++. What is the third option?

I have a PC running Redhat Linux 5.1, using a Motorola Modemsurf 56K

be connected, and then after 5-10 seconds, it disconnected. The script
automatically redial, but it just kept on and off ....

I bought another 56K external modem (Modem Blaster) and it did the same
thing. I then upgrade the PC to Redhat Linux 6.0, did not help. I even
moved the whole thing to another Dell PII-233, and still the same. These 2
modems work fine under Win98 and WinNT off the same network I have at home.

I am running out of ideas, please help.

well, with a loopback or with a single interface, you really don't need a
default gw. But, if you need to fire up ppp, then do this:

pppd -d -detach /dev/modem 56400 &
ifconfig -a
(look for the dynamic ip allocated - call it a.b.c.d)
route add default gw a.b.c.d

this should work if you are trying to dial in to your, say ISP, and are
allocated a dynamic ip.

Yeah, the crudest way of doing things and not at all very pretty; but how
much more can a newbie help, afterall? ;)
