hello out there,

im interressted in setting up a router with my linux box using a leased
line up to 2mbit, up till now i use a 128k dual isdn line wich works
fine. now i would like to know if there is any hardware (like the isdn
cards) supported by linux that could handle such lines. im not a
network guru, so my knowing of the existing hardware is not that big.
so, is there a way doing it with my linux or will i end with a cisco or
something like that.
thanks for your answers

Subject: PPP goes deaf under 2.2.x?
Date: 25 Feb 1999 04:06:38 -0500
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ever since I upgraded to Linux 2.2.x kernel (I have a Debian hamm base
system--I went through all the recommended packages on the linuxhq site,
etc.) my PPP connections are going "deaf" in a most peculiar way.

First, I have ppp 2.3.5 (Debian package 2.3.5-2), Linux 2.2.2. I have a
internal Zoom 56k modem, ISA PnP, on COM2. Note everything worked with
the 2.0.x kernels. I'm using these options to pppd:

  ttyS1 115200 crtscts
  connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/underdog'
  :xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
  ipcp-accept-remote
  asyncmap 0
  user psmith
  noipdefault
  noauth
  defaultroute

I get logs like this when I connect:

Feb 25 03:43:49 ferret pppd[904]: Serial connection established.
  Feb 25 03:43:50 ferret pppd[904]: Using interface ppp0
  Feb 25 03:43:50 ferret pppd[904]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
Feb 25 03:43:52 ferret kernel: PPP Deflate Compression module registered
  Feb 25 03:43:55 ferret pppd[904]: local IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
  Feb 25 03:43:55 ferret pppd[904]: remote IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

I should mention that I have ppp, etc. compiled as a kernel module.

Now, weird things happen. Basically, my connection will proceed
normally, and I can use it normally for a while.

Then, at some random time, the connection will freeze up. _BUT_! It's
not totally frozen. I can do _some_ things over the connection. I can
ping, for example. Quite often I can rlogin or telnet to another host.
I can use client/server CVS, usually.

But, if I login to a remote system and try to invoke "emacs -nw", for
example, then try to read my mail... that session will hang. It will
sit for a long time and eventually it will give a "connection reset by
peer". It also hangs if I try to start less on a file, or cat a long
file. On the other hand, I can use "tail -15" or something, and that
usually works OK. Also, I usually can't successfully access pages via
Netscape. FTP's rarely work. It's almost like the connection works
fine as long as you're not trying to send lots of data, or something.

Once this happens, it will stay like this forever until I stop the
session and reconnect. I can have 5-10 terminals, all logged into the
remote host: they all work fine until I try to less a file or something
like that.

Really, really weird. And really, really annoying.

Does anyone have any hints or pointers? Should I play with the mtu or
mru params? Any interesting debugging options I should try? Etc.

Help.

Subject: ipx_interface argument error
Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 08:59:02 GMT

We are installing a new Linux machine at work. I'm running into a curious
problem with the ipx protocol. When I type

        ipx_interface add -p eth0 802.3
I get a socket: argument error message.

I know the complaint is about the 802.3 argument. I suspect that it is a
kernel/module problem, but I'm not sure. The IP is working like a charm.
This is running RH 5.2, Kernel 2.0.36-0.7. Help is appreciated.

Er, no.

There are desktop hubs, un-managed rack-mount hubs, and managed
rack-mount hubs. Managed hubs are a LOT more expensive than either of
the unmanaged type, mainly I guess because they're a lot less used,
economies of scale and all that. We sell about 50 hubs a month, almost
all of them rack-mount, only one or two of them managed.

Hi,

Juz a question.
I've been setting up DHCP and DNS services on a linux box. However i 'm
encountering problems with dns.
Can the two services be on the same box?? For DNS services, do we need to
specifically include the IP addresses of the workstations. If thats the
case, would this not conflict with DHCP which dynamically allocates IP
addresses?

I am a professional web-designer and I can tell you that the majority of
most high-quality, professional design is done by hand. There are
situations where some kind of editor will help but they are the
rareity(sp?). Hand coding is the only way to truly ensure that the page
ends up looking exactly how you intended it to. I have never seen a WYSIWYG
editor that was truly What You See Is What You Get. More often it is What
You See Is What You Hope You Get. Plus most of the liscences on these
programs are outrageously expensive.

Subject: write/send to socket crashes process - How come?
Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 11:26:48 +0100

When I write/send to a (TCP/IP) socket the writing thread (and process)
crashes if the receiving system crashes. So if the receiving system
crashes,
receiving sockets are not closed correctly (I think). But this may not
be a reason
for the sender to crash.

The process crashes when it sends to a socket that the sender 'sees'
still as correct
but has a corresponding receive socket that is not correct anymore due
to a crash of
the receiving process. After the crash of the receiver, it is always the
second message
(write) to the socket that lets sender crash.

Is there a solution for the problem? I think the send() or write()
function should return
with -1 instead of letting the system crash.

Thanks in advance,

Hello,
we're running a Linux (SuSE 5.3) NIS Master server and a couple of SUN
NIS Slave servers. Everything works fine, except of the hosts.byaddr.
Those files (hosts.byaddr.dir and hosts.byaddr.pag) have the permission
600 on the slave servers, where all the other files (e.g.
hosts.byname.*) have the permission 644.
On a client that binds to one of the NIS slave servers I get (of
course) :

sun8<gass>% ypcat -k hosts.byaddr
no such map in server's domain

Does anyone have an idea why the permissions are different for the
hosts.byaddr files when they are transfered from the Master server and
how the problem can be solved?
Thanx in advance

If you have the money, go buy yourself a nice 3Com card. You'll save
yourself a LOT of trouble.

As for your card, there is a driver for almost every piece of hardware in
existence (even those old, stale ISA cards from long ago) on this site
... hmm, which is listed on my NETSCAPE (on my Win98 partition, of which
I haven't gotten a driver to mount it yet ...) bookmark file. Sorry.

As I understand it only Livingston Portmasters are compatible with Linux
EQL - this information is old though so I may be wrong.

I suspect that the best bet is for you to speak to your ISP and ask them
whether they support Linux EQL connections.

In my college we have some *old*

university mail system, and are called;

zaphod-beebblebrox
arthur-dent
ford-prefect
slartibarfast
margaretha (I think)

(actually there are 6/7 machines so I've undoutably forgotten a few!)

(there are a couple I can't remember)

It's cool to login and see last host being one of the above.

As a side note some of the college servers are called george, and augustus.
After Bishop George Augustus Selwyn (which the college was founded in memory
of).

btw My laptop is quango, a PS/2 is diablo (it will be painted bright red and
