I just installed Red Hat 5.2 on my computer with an old ISA Ethernet realtek
8019 inside.
The problem is that Linux always finds it busy and does not want to activate
it. The only thing that is working is the loopback device.
To check the base address and irq of the card, i plugged it in an another
computer powered (:-)) by Windows 98 but even with these parameters, i get
again and again the same words on the screen : eth0 is busy, busy, busy.
If anyone could help me....

I am trying a linux box for SMTP. Its running sendmail. Internal mails are
working fine. It can send mails to the internet but it cant receive any
mails. e.g If I send a mail from hotmail.com to this server I am trying the
mail comes back saying :

Is the problem with my service provider or my server. Does my server need to

definetly running sendmail at port 25 as deamon .
Can anybody tell me whats happening ????

OK, first Sygate is a NAT, not a proxy server. So, you
cannot expect it to function in that mode. Secondly, my
luck with getting Linux to pickup the needed info from
Sygate's DHCP server has been flakey, at best.
So, I used fixed addressing, manually massaging the files on
the linux box to see the gateway. Mine is working good
configured this way, regardless of which OS is on my client
side.

Can someone point me to a company that offers
a PCI Board to connect to a E1 link, with 30 v.90

I've seen these already: Ariel, Brooktrout,
Harmonix, Spellcast. Perhaps the later two have
linux support, they won't offer the v.90 modems
inside the same board.

Look in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1. Check the line that looks like this:
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 ${IPADDR} broadcast ${BROADCAST} netmask ${NETMASK}
make another line right below it that replaces eth0 with eth1 and uses the IP
address and broadcast address that goes with eth1.
That should be all there is to it, except possibley adding a static route, but
I'd try it first.

*** Can't find server name for address 10.0.0.6: No response from server

I'm using bind for the DNS server. Where should the configuration files
be? I have them presently in /var/log/named.

Paul,
You still only need two NICs in your gateway. On the @home interface,
you'll want to setup an alias, e.g. eth0:0, eth0:1, and so on for each
additional IP address. The NET-3 HOWTO explains this as well as
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/network/alias.txt.
You could then use ipfwadm/ipchains rules or rinetd
(http://www.boutell.com/rinetd) to forward traffic to those new IPs to
hosts inside your network and your masquerading rules will translate the
traffic on the way out.

I was not aware of this chip switch untill I saw your post. I am dismayed
that Netgear is using the same NIC model # in spite of the heart of the unit
being switched to another chipset.

My short research seems to indicate that this is a O/S specific issue; would
you aggree with that ?.
Lastly; is it safe to assume that PNIC reports it self as such and not one
of the earlier chipsets ?.

An IRQ conflict between pppd and the hard drive *might* cause this.
Or perhaps you are logging an extraordinary amount of pppd data to
some file, usually in /var/log but directed there as specified in
/etc/syslog.conf.
One thing that causes a lot of pppd logging is using the pppd option
"kdebug 7". Another thing is to specify something like
*.* /var/log/<whatever>
in /etc/syslog.conf . Reading "man syslogd" and "man syslog.conf" can
help understand more about syslogd logging.

Subject: Win98->Linux PPP server freezes after 5 minutes
Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 16:40:00 -0600
I've set up a PPP server on an old 486 running Red Hat Linux 6.0 (2.2.5-15
kernel). The modem is connected to an old serial board, which setserial
identifies as a UART 16450. I'm running mgetty (1.1.14-8) on the port, and
the ppp version is 2.3.7-2.
When I dial in from my home Linux box, everything seems great. I get good,
reliable performance. When I boot the same machine in Windows 98 and dial
in, all seems well at first. Then after a few minutes, the interface seems
to hang or freeze. Any transfers that are going on just stop. I can't ping
the server or anything on the other side. Then after a few minutes, it
sometimes picks up again, like nothing happened. The process repeats like
this, or can hang and never come back (where never>=5 minutes---when I just
give up and disconnect).
I don't think it is a problem with the Windows 98 setup because I use the
same machine to call 3 other PPP ISPs and have never had this problem in 98
(or Linux).
I have turned on IP forwarding and proxy arp on the server:
# echo -n 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
# echo -n 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/ppp0/proxy_arp
The latter did not seem necessary (maybe it is builtin to the proxyarp
option of pppd?), because it works fine without it.
I use these options for pppd
[root@mule log]# cat /etc/ppp/options
asyncmap 0
netmask 255.255.255.255
proxyarp
lock
crtscts
modem
I did seem to get better performance when dialing in from linux if I also
set MTU and MRU to 576. (Is this something that is necessary or detrimental
to Windows Dial-up Networking? How do you set it in Windows?)
These /var/log/messages might contain clues. When I connect linux->linux, I
see this:
Aug 22 16:27:56 mule kernel: PPP BSD Compression module registered
Aug 22 16:27:57 mule kernel: PPP Deflate Compression module registered
But when I connect form Windows 98, I see this:
Aug 22 16:59:30 mule kernel: PPP Deflate Compression module registered
Aug 22 16:59:30 mule pppd[6748]: CCP terminated by peer
Aug 22 16:59:30 mule pppd[6748]: Compression disabled by peer.
In Dial-Up Networking I have the compression options turned on. Any ideas
on what's causing the lock-ups, or things I could try to further diagnose
the problem?
