Running Redhat 6 2.2.5-15 .
I get the initial UDP 177 greeter (GNOME), but seems to die after that.
(same subnet.)
What do I need to do to make this work?
I'm using Exceed Humingbird...works fine for the Sun boxes. (doh)
Thanks in advance.

What's the easiest way to shut of unneeded online services (web
server, ftp server, etc.) in Red Hat 6.0? I'm going to be connecting
my network to a cablemodem and I don't want the isp scanning me for
these servers and shutting me down.

I suggest that you read the PPP-HOWTO -- your questions are answered

Dont know what QVT Terminal Emulation program does. Posibilites are that ur
NT box runs a telnet server and people connect to it using just terminal
emulation and no PPP or SLIP. In that case use minicom ( in linux) but u
wont be able to access ur excahnge mails. If ur NT RAS accepts ppp, In that
case connect to NT RAS from ur linux box using ppp. Find out ur RAS accepts
pap or chap for authentication. Then read the ppp-howto. If it is ppp then u
can acces ur exchange mails from linux.

How should my machine's hostname be set? Is it supposed to be the FQDN or
just the base part? In other words "jake.home.com" or "jake"? I've tried it
both ways and either way seems to work but, in all cases, 'hostname -f' fails
with a lookup error.
I am not running DNS or NIS.
Thanx!

If you start your X server, it's pretty easy to configure a dial-up
connection there.

well, in fact I don't know the answer to your question, but I know it works.
unfortunatly, I made it work a few weeks ago, but I changed many thing in my
config, and now it won't anymore...
I have now a very similar problem as yours.
my config:
Linux Red-Hat 6.0 with two NICs (eth0->internet and eth1->local network)
IPMasq config
when I try to reach my linux box from inside (local nw) or outside
(internet) thru http, it works well
but if I try to telnet or ftp or rlogin it from anywhere (even from my linux
box) it connects and tell me that service isn't available (ftp error 421) or
connection reset by peer...
but I know that ftp or telnet is running cause it is effectively connected
during a few seconds:
(for ftp)
# fuser -a -v -n tcp 21
USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
23/tcp root 425 f.... inetd
root 1982 f.... tcpd
so, what's happening ?
Thanx for your help

Tom,
An ISP can detect a host running masquerading by looking at port
number usage. Masquerading typically remaps port numbers to the 6xxxx
range.
This is the only way they can detect masquerading, and this is not a
sure-fire indication of someone using masquerading. I doubt if it
would stand up legally if they tried to cut you off.

Reply-To: markj*no*spam*@gilanet.com
I upgraded my RH5.1 system the hard way. Afterward, I found that routed
writes an error message to my logfile every minute or so:
Aug 26: 16:29:26 mybox routed[370]: packet from unknown router,
127.0.0.1
>From the manpage for routed, I see that the loopback interface should be
ignored by routed. So, I look at the source code in
/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/netkit-routed-0.10/routed.
1. I find where the error message prints in the file input.c.
It appears that what happens is this: input.c gets some input/packet
with the RIPCMD_RESPONSE flag set; it checks whether this is from a
router it should be handling, by looking it up; it doesn't find
127.0.0.1, so it sends an error via SYSLOG.
2. I figure that the kernel shouldn't be sending loopback stuff as input
to routed, so I look at startup.c and find:
void ifinit(void) loops through the interfaces (reading each struct
interface) and does stuff with them. Among other things, it checks to
see whether an interface is the loopback interface by comparing a flag
called IFF_LOOPBACKwith a struct interface member called int_flags.
3. I now hypothesize that, somehow, my lo/loopback interface is not
getting its IFF_LOOPBACK flag set by init scripts. How can I check this?
Does it have something to do with SIOCGIFCONF? Where can I get info
about this?

I recently upgraded my kernel to 2.2.10 (from 2.0.36), and since doing
so, I have been unable to get my Etherpower II working. If anybody
has any suggestions where I go from here, I would be most grateful!
I'm using version 1.06 of the driver, and am trying to connect it to a

debug=6 options=4 full_duplex=0
to the module.
The card appears to be correctly detected at startup:

Look at these scripts:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network (examine the lines following "for $i in interfaces; do")

RHX (where X<=6.0) comes with an old tulip.c than doesn't work well with
the Netgear cards. Eg, the tulip.c with RH6.0 is dated 5/23/98. I use one
dated 2/99 and everything works fine. Go get you a newer one at:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/tulip.html
You'll need to compile it and replace tulip.o with the newly compiled
module.

I did the"TIMEOUT 5" because, using minicom, I saw that the dial-in server
expects 2 <ENTER>'s before asking for Userid: and I couldn't figure out how
to send 2 <ENTER>'s any other way using CAHT scripts except to send one,
timeout, and send the second.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Subject: NFSD Won't Start
Date: 26 Aug 1999 22:03:31 GMT
I have a Redhat 5.2 / 2.0.36 system that can't start rpc.nfsd.
When trying to start it by hand (su - then rpc.nfsd -F) it whines:
svc_run: - select failed: Bad file descriptor
... Oh no Mr. Bill.... nfs_server() returned!
Perhaps the author was not particularly expecting this event.
This is, as far as I know (and I installed it), a normal 5.2 system,
with the exception that it has the extra-file-descriptor patches for
Informix 7.3. It certainly seems likely that there's a relationship.
This system really is running Informix, and doing it quite well, and I
need for it to continue doing that. I was wondering if anyone knows
something about this particular problem, or if it's time for me to
find the rpc.nfsd source and chase this problem, probably back into
the kernel and the Informix patch.
Thanks,
Dwight Rudolph

Subject: wu_ftp problem
Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 21:30:56 GMT
I am using wu_ftp (different versions) on both REDHAT5.2 and 6.0.
Here is the problem:
After I type "ftp myftpserver" from a client machine,
"connected to myftpserver" message immediately shows. But after that,
it take a few minutes to get "FTP server ready" message and "Name:"
prompt.
Any idea what causes this?
TIA,
Jiu
