I just installed dhcpcd-1.3.17-pl2 on my Redhat 5.2 system (2.0.34 kernel).
When I issue the dhcpcd command I get the following in /var/log/messages:

Aug 26 17:12:42 CT38231-A modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-17
Aug 26 17:12:42 CT38231-A dhcpcd[820]: dhcpStart: socket: Invalid argument

I'm not sure what the first error is all about. Do I need to add something
to /etc/conf.modules?

I'm assuming the second error is related to not having SOCK_PACKET compiled
into my kernel. The README that came with the dhcpcd package mentions
that SOCK_PACKET must be in the kernel, but when I did a "make config" on
the kernel I didn't see anything that looked like it would do the trick.
Just how do I go about adding SOCK_PACKET to my kernel?

Hi

I have set up a Compaq 5133 as a firewall to the internet. All seems to work
but complex web pages and large ftp transfers fail. IFconfig shown numerous
collisions on the network card on the local network. A simple web page
displayed on a windoze box from the internet will display every time.
Retrieving mail from the pop sever works but is very slow.

Any ideas where to look?

Hmmmmmmm, I always wondered what the '-f' parameter was for.
Now I know. :)

I'm by no means a sendmail expert but I thought the genericstable
file was used to convert a local mail name to an outgoing address
and not the other way around.

If the sendmail site (http://www.sendmail.org) is not any help,
then you might post to the sendmail newsgroup and ask there.

I have two linux computers hooked up with a cross-over cable. The one
computer, my server, has a tape drive in it running taper 6.9a, the other
computer is my firewall. I would like to make an archive of my firewall to
tape. Is there a Howto that tells you how to do a remote back up?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

well.. u can guess it if you see a lot of outgoing connections originating

that port.

Subject: PPP auto-dial on Netscape startup?
Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 02:42:56 +0000

Hi All,

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it in the
HOWTO. I am wondering how to configure my system to automatically dial
PPP when TCP/IP request is made to a network outside my home. I have a
network in my home (192..168.blah-blah), and I use IP Masq to share the
outside line between two machines. I would like to have the kernel (or
whoever) automatically fire up PPP when a request from inside the house
needs to go out to the Internet.

Advice? Are there documents someplace that I haven't seen? Before I
went FAT-free (wiped out Windoze), this always worked, albeit without
the masq :->. Now, it's a bit of a hassle to have my wife log into the
Linux server just to start ppp so she can read email on her Mac.
Besides, I want to set up sendmail/fetchmail to use it too...

Oh my, what a little server I'm making for myself...

THANKS for the help. Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
/vic...

- It can boot Windows NT, which is no mean feat.

- Ditto for Windows 95 and 98, again, nontrivial tasks.

- I hear that someone used it to host Hurd atop Linux, again
  indicating that it is providing a quite convincing emulation of a
  virtual machine.

I haven't heard of anyone trying to use it to host any of the BSD's;
that would be an interesting test of its capabilities, as that is
almost certainly *not* something it was intended by design to be able
to do.

One of the guys at the local LUG has used VMware several times to
demonstrate how one would configure Linux to interoperate with WinTel,
without the need of having a second computer on hand.

VMware looks like a slick way of testing out network configurations
without the need to sling around extra boxes and Ethernet cabling.

I suspect it might be useful to kernel hackers; it allows you to run
Linux atop Linux, and thereby be able to simultaneously have:
a) A flakey kernel that you're trying to debug, along with
b) Development tools to fiddle with the code and so forth,
all on one box.

This is a very strange situation... My linux box (running Mandrake
Redhat 6.0 on a P133) hooks up to the Internet using pppd 2.3.7 and chat
1.17. I used to have a 33.6K modem and I used it to connect to the
33.6K line provided by an ISP. I worked perfectly OK... Later my boss
provided me a 56K line and I used the same 33.6 modem to connect to the
56K line (which uses PAP authentication) provided by the same ISP...
Strange thing happened:

Below is what I captured from the debugging log (/var/log/messages) on a

====================================================================

Below are the script for calling pppd and the chat script and the
pap-secrets file use:

1. Script for calling pppd:

#!/bin/sh

TELEPHONE=8989898
USERNAME=my-login-id
PASSWORD=my-password

export TELEPHONE USERNAME PASSWORD
DIALER_SCRIPT=/etc/ppp/chatscript

exec /usr/sbin/pppd \
    connect $DIALER_SCRIPT \
    name $USERNAME \
    /dev/modem 115200 lock noipdefault debug crtscts modem defaultroute

2. The chat script

#!/bin/sh

/usr/sbin/chat -v \
    ABORT       '\nBUSY\r' \
    ABORT       '\nNO ANSWER\r' \
    ""          AT \
    OK          ATZ \
    OK          ATDT$TELEPHONE \
    CONNECT     ""

3. pap-secrets file

my-login-id    *    my-password

=============================================================================

Is there anything missing in the scripts above? The scripts I use for
connecting to the 33.6K lines work everytime... but the scripts for the
56K don't... and,
in fact, they seldom work with my 33.6K modem. Later on, I got myself a
56K Acer Modem (external) and the success rate goes up a bit... 6
successful logons out of 10, I guess.

What could be the problem here? I am especially confused by the log,
which says that the connection is not "8-bit clean". How should I fix
the problem and what "cleaning-agents" should I use to make the 8-bit
clean?

Jimmy the Frustrated...

Have you tried "view source" of the page. If SSI is not working, it would
show the above statements as is. If it is working is would show something
like "[an error was encountered processing this directive]".

Neither of the above is correct. First of all does the script run without
errors when you enter its URL directly in the browser. If not, then you
have to solve that first. Note that /cgi-bin is the main cgi-bin, not the
user's and you cannot use a full URL (just full or relative URL path
without the domain).  Try "/~user/cgi-bin/ViPcounter/vipcounter.pl"

Are you missing: AddType text/html .shtml

You have that disabled anyway with "AllowOverride none".

You access CGI just like you would access a web page, with a proper URL
path. Using a full path (without the domain) avoids problems when
relocating pages within that user.

Sendmail doesn't do POP3. You likely forgot to install a POP server from
your CD. Either that or it is a DNS problem.
