Edit /etc/conf.modules, change to:
alias eth0 3c509b
(or whatever the right driver module is).
It might be compiled in, or it might not exist. If it's not
compiled in or compiled out to a module, rebuild your kernel
modules with the driver included.
This is for 2.0.x. I assume it works the same for 2.x.
You can try to load with the command:
insmod 3c509b (or whatever).

I use Mandrake 6 on a notebook as well with a 3c574 NIC card. My Mandrake
install was kernel version 2.2.9-19. The update site has upgrades for
kernel, kernel-pcmcia-cs, initscripts and several other modules. After
upgrading at least this group, my 3c574 NIC functions - prior to that it
would not operate at all.
Also I found that I could not operate both my NIC card and a separate PCMCIA
modem at the same time until I change an entry in pcmcia.opts - it had IRQ 4
excluded - removing this allowed both PCMCIA cards to operate
simultaneously.

That makes me suspect your masquerading timeouts. I recently set mine
way too low and experienced the same symptoms. I think mine are set
to now set to 900 10 60 (for ipchains).

Subject: while routing - casual paket loss
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 21:16:45 GMT
hi there,
we have a network of three segments seperated from the internet by a
firewall. the three segments are routed by a server running three
networkcards, kernel 2.0.37, samba, apache and dns. on low traffic
everything works fine/perfect.
on high traffic times the router just drops pakets of a station for a
few minutes (, while all the other workstations are routed normal).
this can happen to any computer on any segment (looks like
the failure is random). after a while everything works normal again.
sometimes its still possible to reach the samba server. sometimes its
not.
any idea whats going on here?
best regards

I am having a weird problem with my ppp. The modem dials out and seems
to negotiate a connection, but I don't get any IP address back. Someone
please help me out with this. This was working with my old ISP, and

Jim,
Telnet uses the resolver libs (type: man resolver) which provide access to
the Internet Domain Name System (DNS). The resolver libs are configured
through the /etc/resolv.conf file and the /etc/nsswitch.conf. At least on
the RedHat versions I have used.
Judging from your post, I would say that the older system that you mentioned
does not have the resolver libs properly configured. You might want to check
that out before you go and grab the source code.

Maybe you'll find an apropriate driver on Donald Becker's driver page.

Hi, I have Red Hat 6.0 connected to an external modem. The modem is on com
2 using the defaults for com 2. I cannot seem to get the modem to dial, I
have set up the modem and network properites in GNOME. I have checked the
/var/log/dmesg file and there is a /dev/ttyS1 present and the port and irq
are are setup correctly in GNOME. Any ideas as to what I could be doing
wrong. Also Minicomm sometimes gives me the message:modem is locked.
Thanks for your help.

This answer may be moot because I have no idea what CVS stands for.
It sounds to me like you have two computers. One running Linux
and one running Windows. The modem or whatever you are using to
get to the Internet is on the Windows box.
If this is so, then all you need to do is tell the Linux machine
that the gateway address is the IP address of the Windows machine.
All you need to do is get into the network scripts and set this up.
On my Slackware system, this is all done in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.

Hi,
I using Mandrake 6.0 and I installed the thing through the web (FTP). But
after the installation the network is not working. I'm on a DHCP network. I
have an Intel Etherjet 10/100 Board.
The board is loaded in kernelcfg under eth0.
Any ideas ?

Absolutely! You need to investigate usernetctl. After I configured PPP
in Redhat through Linuxconf, from the command line I use this when I want a
PPP connection up.
[bwillcox@hades]bwillcox$ usernetctl ppp0 up
and it should bring up your PPP connection. To drop it, substitute "down"
for up.
If you ever use X Windows, the command Usernet there will allow you to
graphically see whether or not your PPP is connected.
