You can only run one ppp connection on a particular serial port, but you
can run multiple programs that use that ppp connection at the same time.
For example you can browse the net while downloading a file. Or you can
have a telnet session up for editing a file while your web browser is up
for checking the result. However, if you fill up your bandwidth during
file download, then other remote functions will slow down.

Thanks for the suggestion, but pinging the interface doesn't really address

If you aren't using shadow passwords, you should edit
the /var/yp/Makefile and remove the "shadow" map name
from the line beginning "all:..." which contains a
list of maps to build. You might need to remove
other map names as well (I had to take out netid, ethers,
and a few others.)

On your Linux web server (I assume it will be running
Apache) you could run the Mars NetWare server emulator.
Mars makes the Linux look (electronically) like a NetWare
server. If you do that then your existing workstations can
access it just as if it were another NW server (map drives,
etc).

If a user types in his/her password more than x times, I want the account to
be automatically disabled.
I have been experimenting with faillog(8) with bad results. Even if I set
the max logins to 2, the user gets unlimited times to enter a password.
Also, when I list the logins who have failed, faillog(8) always says that
there have been zero(0) incorrect logins. Even if I intentionally screw up
the login, this happens.
Any ideas?

Subject: RH6 - Printing Proverbs?!? - Help!
Date: Fri, 3 Sep 1999 21:32:23 -0700
Hello Folks,
I've got a strange printing problem. I have a RH6.0 box that prints to via
lpr to an hp4000.
When I do something like "lpr -Phplab /etc/printcap" all I get is one blank
page and a page with one line of a proverb on the top. From a windows box
via samba I'll get the desired page AND the one line proverb page.
It's not that I don't think the proverbs are great, it's just using too much
paper! ;-)
I've reinstalled lpr-0.35.1.i386, printtool-3.40-3.noarch.rpm and
rhs-printfilters-1.51-2.i386.rpm.
I've compared the printcap file on our problem RH6 box with the old one on
our RH5.2 box and they are the same. When I print from the RH5.2 box
everything works great.
When I try to do a postscript test from the new RH6 box all I get is the
proverb.
Where do I go from here? Oh wait, this latest one says, "Any journey begins
with a single..."
arrrrgggggg.....
/etc/printcap looks like this:
##PRINTTOOL3## REMOTE POSTSCRIPT 1200x1200 letter {} PostScript Default {}
hplab:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hplab:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:rm=198.236.126.7:\

:if=/var/spool/lpd/hplab/filter:
Any help appreciated,
;-) Paul

The Linux CookBook Project is up and running. I've nabbed some "free" space

Check out the first official release... "Windows / SAMBA Basics - RedHAt

I hope this is of value to anyone and everyone who has spent hours and hours
trying to figure out SAMBA.

otherwise:
edit your /etc/HOSTNAME file to look like this:
pulsar
It appears that your HOSTNAME file has pulsar.gomes.edu instead of just the

You were at least almost right; just heard from a chap in Switzerland with

asyncmap 0x00000000
(was that what you meant, Clifford?)

e.g., from Martin Stover's site http://www.compu-art.de/mars_nwe/

I would have to guess the BIOS has some APM features enabled that are
putting the machine to sleep. I disable all APM in the BIOS and let
Linux handle turning off the monitor. Other things such as doze and
hybernation are tossed.. :)

Problem solved:
I did the following:
1) logged on to the system using Telnet and as root created a dir /rpm
2) chmod /rpm so it was writable for all
3) uncommented the pop3 line in /etc/inetd.conf
4) used my FTP client and uploaded the imap package to /rpm
5) in Telnet: rpm i /rpm/imap-4.5-3.i386.rpm
6) in Telnet: killall -HUP inetd
This fixed the problem and the POP3 server is now running fine.

My cable-modem interface slows down. I can watch the ping times slowly but
surely increase. If I take the interface down and then up again, the ping
time goes right down, then again begins to increase. What could cause this?
Is it in my system, in the modem, or in the router?

Yes, write does send all 2000 bytes and the recv does not timeout.
I found the problem myself: recv behaves differently on different
machines. On Solaris, for example, it returns when only part of the
expected amount of data has been received--in this case, the data in
the first fragment. A second call to recv is needed to get the data
from the second (and last) fragment. On some machines I've used, recv
will not return until it either receives all the data requested, or it
times out.
Another annoying thing: some systems either return an error or ignore
an attempt to set the receive low water mark with a setsockopt call.
