Your netmasks are messed up - you have 2 IP interfaces in the same
subnet. This is not a valid IP configuration. The kernel is throwing
everything down the first interface.
Your only solution is to narrow the subnet mask for at least one of the
two, and allow one interface to own outbound routing for the subnet.
With the recent volume of posts like this in c.o.l.n I am wondering if
the Linux IP stuff needs a rethink - e.g. Solaris will not allow you to
create this situtation. Perhaps Linux encourages the tinkerer in all of
us too much ;-)

David, this is a paranoid feature of tcpwrappers,. you'll find that nfsd/mountd
are compiled against the libwrap library and so DNS and /etc/hosts becomes an
issue

Cards don't respond to ping! -- rather the system sends an echo-reply
ICMP packet which is routed based on the destination IP. It sounds as
though the route to 192.168.0.0/24 is through the eth0 interface. In
that case, it is working as I would have expected it to.
If you are going to use this system as a gateway/router then you will
connect one of the cards to your cable modem via a hub or cross-over
cable - the other card must be on a separate hub/switch connected to
your local network.

ISTR that different versions of that card may/may not work with the
stock tulip drivers. At any rate, the drivers that come on the floppy
with the card had better work - and it's a good place to start if the
other poster's having trouble setting up the cards.

A search of http://www.deja.com should give plenty of hits on
the problem with in.pop3d. I don't remember exactly what the
error message was, but if you have it or just a few key words,
you should get what you want.
I inserted popper on a home Slackware system about 1 1/2 years
ago and have not had any problems. All I am doing is poping
email from the Linux machine to a Windows machine with Eudora.

Okay folks, I need a little point in the right direct. I have finally given into
the linux thing and dumped my NT server ( on loan , that s the real reason). I
have just puchased 6 Netgear FA310TX PCI Card and upgraded all my machines and
hub to 100Mbit. I have linux installed and started on my server. It worked fine
with the western didgital module to run my kingston 10Mbit card. When I
reinstalled the system (debian) from scratch, I choose the the tulip module for
I believe 21040 (i'm not sure now). The system see's both netgear cards on boot
up but, they do not appeart to wrking. Anyway, I have no idea how on a linux
system to upgrade to the newer drivers everyone is talking about. Where can I
find the info on how to install this driver and get it working

For a started RedHat is a pretty good one to get your feet wet. Go to
www.lsl.com and get a copy for something like 5 bucks or less. You could also
go to a store like CompUSA and buy the retail box version which also includes
books and tech support from RedHat
Samba can be downloaded from www.samba.org This will allow you to share files
and printers back and forth with the Windows clients. If you want documentation
there are many books out there on how to configure Samba
Proxy is called Squid and can be downloaded from http://squid.nlanr.net/ All
information you could need for this program is located on thier site. If you
need to get pop mail through or real audio then you will need to configure
ipchains.
That should do it.
I did the same thing to learn Linux. I come from an entire windows background
and the learning curve for linux was steep (at least for me) but you can get
there. I am still trying to figure out ipchains!!!!
Hope that helps

you can cheat
AIX is a rather clusmy monster
basically on the AIX box
you could copy over the linux "xterm-color|" entry
into AIX's /etc/termcap
or alternatively set your TERM=xterm on the linux box before
telnetting to the AIX box. It is possible that the AIX box may not
have a particulary good termcap file, you should have the AIX
administrator
trawl through the AIX CD set's for a more complete copy

Thats very odd
/etc/inittab should have defined at least a few consoles at startup
to run off the keyboard (technically incorrect naming)
ie
# Run gettys in standard runlevels
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
so I'd have expected these to exist before the networking kicks in
anyway
the 'dirty' way of fixing this is to abuse lilo
at the
lilo:
prompt
use
linux single
or
linux init=/bin/bash
it's a bit untidy going from this route but you will be able to edit
files
if you remount the partitions rw
(ie mount -o remount, rw / )
edit, save, *sync*, reboot

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have several questions regarding changes in NFS under RH 6.0 that I
wonder if anyone can answer. I was not able to find suitable
explanations in the man pages and the relevant (now outdated?) HOWTOs.
1) Under RH 5.2, there were two nfsd processes listening at 2049,
one using upd and another using tcp. Now the default seems to be udp
only. Why?
2) Is there a way to force nfsd to use tcp?
3) mountd formerly had all udp and tcp processes listening at 635; now
I get all the processes listening at different ports:
173: rpcinfo -p
program vers proto port
100000 2 tcp 111 portmapper
100000 2 udp 111 portmapper
100005 1 udp 817 mountd
100005 1 tcp 819 mountd
100005 2 udp 822 mountd
100005 2 tcp 824 mountd
100005 3 udp 827 mountd
100005 3 tcp 829 mountd
100003 2 udp 2049 nfs
Where exactly are these ports being set?
4) Is there a way to force all the mountd processes to use the same
port?
5) In RH 5.2, /etc/services assigns ports to both mountd and nfsd. In
RH 6.0, neither is listed. Why is this?
Any answers appreciated.

No, but you'll need a crossover cable. Use the cross-over cable between
one nic and your cable modem and connect the other NIC to the hub and
your local network.

I have for some time now had two Win 98 PC's running using SAMBA (yes it
does work) running under Red Hat 5.2. Now I decided that I ought to upgrade
so got Mandrake 6.0 (Red Hat 6.0). All of the original settings are the same
PC's ip (169.254.118.50 and 169,254.118.55), server 169.254.118.60, netmask
255.255.0.0. All other settings are equally unchanged. There were no changes
made to the hardware either. I did however do a full install of the system,
installing ALL components this time.
The two PC's can see each other but not Linux, the Linux box can see itself
and the loopback. When pinging the PC's from the Linux box the lights on the
hub flash, but thats all.
I am certain that there are no hardware issues hre as none of the boxes have
been moved or opened and can at least see the hub.
Now I think we have a software problem here, the question is what is it.
All help welcome

If you don't have ppp-2.3.9 then you won't get PPP to work with the 2.3.x
kernel series.

You will have a "direct connection" to the internet, whatever that means.
Depending on which services you want to make available to the outside world,
you should be able to protect yourself adequately with judicious use of
IPchains filtering. Read the relevant HOWTOs for specific advice.

I get wierd characters in my text files when I use samba to copy files
between NT and Linux, they look like this in the text file after copying
them to linux from NT ^M
I use ftp to avoid this , how can I configure samba.conf to stop this
character insertion over netbios.

I've just picked up a 3Com Impact IQ (external) ISDN adapter and am
having trouble connecting to
a NT ras server using XISP.
I can connect every time with an analog modem to the same NT server.
output from /var/log/messages

This is the same type error that I was getting when I was having
problems with my chap script using the analog modem. Not sure where to
go from here any suggestions would be appreciated.

Subject: network neighbourhood over cable modem
Date: Mon, 6 Sep 1999 22:53:09 +0200
i have a few pcs an one server with suse linux 6.1 (kernel 2.2.7). in this
server, there are two network cards installed: one for the local network
(192.168.0.1) and one for the cable modem (10.32.1.152). i've installed
samba version 2.05a and enabled wins support. now the problem: my friend
also has a cable modem (ip: 10.32.1.23) and i can connect with smbclient
(smbclient -L computername -I 10.32.1.23; smbclient -L computername doesn't
work) and it shows me his shares (on his win98 machine). on his pc, i've
configured the network-card to use 10.32.1.152 (my server) as wins-server,
and my hope is that i can see him in my network neighbourhood. we both use
the same provider an therefore we can connect to each others with the
internal ip adresses of our provider's network.
i am using win98 on my pc, which has ip 192.168.0.40 (the
wins-server/gateway is 192.168.0.1 and it is connected to the internet
through the linux-server). the question is now, how do i have do configure
my linux-server/the other pcs that i can see my friend's computer in my
network neighbourhood and that he can see all the pcs behind my linux-server
(sometimes (i can't say why), he sees my server (only the server) and he can
connect to it, but normally, he can't find my pcs).
in samba, i've added both interfaces; ip-forwarding is also enabled. my
ip-chains: no chains except chain forward: masquerade everything.
i think it's not an easy problem, but maybe someone can help me?! if you
don't understand how the pcs are connected and what ip adresses they have,
please feel free to ask me!
thanks a lot
