Did you also alter the Win98 registry on the machine you are logining
in from?

See the docs.

You might try ATX3DT <phone number> instead of ATDT <phone number>.
This may help.

Subject: Weird network problem with SuSE 6.1
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi there. I've had SuSE 6.1 running for quite some time both
at home and at work, but just recently my home system has started
having problems with ethernet networking. It's PPP modem link
to work still operates perfectly, however.

The system is a PII/350 system and NE2000 clone card connected
to a 10 base-T hub. Also connected to the hub are another SuSE
Pentium and a Slackware Pentium Laptop. The two pentium systems
can ping/telnet/ftp to each other perfectly, however the PII can
only ping to another machine or be pinged. Both hostname and IP
pings work fine. But, when trying to use any other protocol, the
connection times out.

Here's an example of a telnet:

astfgl@dis:~ > telnet 192.168.1.5
Trying 192.168.1.5...
[at this point nothing happens for many, many minutes]

Running a netstat before the telnet times out gives the following:

astfgl@dis:~ > netstat | head
Active Internet connections (w/o servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
tcp 0 1 dis.hell.org.au:1372 dual.hell.org.au:telnet SYN_SENT

Running a tcpdump while this is happening generates the following,
which is repeated until finally the telnet times out. The hub lights
flicker sporadically while the arp traffic is going back and forth.

21:18:23.088332 arp who-has dual.hell.org.au tell dis.hell.org.au
21:18:23.088995 arp reply dual.hell.org.au is-at 0:80:c7:7a:bb:90
21:18:27.080707 dual.hell.org.au.telnet > dis.hell.org.au.1377: S 2825157604:28
21:18:30.420635 dis.hell.org.au.1378 > dual.hell.org.au.telnet: S 3595019236:35
21:18:30.421961 dual.hell.org.au.telnet > dis.hell.org.au.1378: S 4182774870:41
21:18:33.418112 dual.hell.org.au.telnet > dis.hell.org.au.1378: S 4182774870:41
21:18:33.418355 dis.hell.org.au.1378 > dual.hell.org.au.telnet: S 3595019236:35

Now, I assumed that maybe inetd was trying to do some type of RARP
authentication or something, so I set up named with forward and reverse
mapping, etc. Same thing happens.

Does anyone have any idea? This is really beginning to get on my
nerves.

  Thanks, glen.

We have a Cisco router, and wants to run scripts and log its events.
We have now installed Redhat linux 5.1 on a server as a gateway to the
Internet and are wondering if there is any programs for Linux that we can
use for this. Before we used win NT hyperterminal.

The SIGHUP exit from pppd is the same problem I'm
incurring. The script is fine (I can test it in
minicom, exit and start pppd - and it works) -
for some reason, the second ppp goes up after a
"connect 'chat ...', pppd dies...

Subject: Multiple Intel Etherexpress Solved.(?)

I'm taking the weird step of replying to my own post, 'cause I found an
answer to my question. (AN answer, not THE answer. There may be others.)
Seems that the Linux Router Project (www.linuxrouter.org) message
archive (search on "EtherExpress") describes the same problem I had
(viz., eexpress.o doesn't recognize 2 NICs), with an elegant solution.

Solution follows, and I quote:

"...
Basically, it seemed to me that the eexpress module was
only recognizing one of my two EtherExpress cards. I've tried
combos like

 eexpress io=0x300,0x320
 eexpress io=0x300,0x320 irq=10,11
 eexpress irq=10,11 io=0x320,0x300

but they just didn't work.

What DID work, is:

 eexpress irq=10 io=0x300
 eexpress -o eexp1 irq=11 io=0x320

The second line loaded the eexpress module again under a different
name - "eexp1". When the second one loaded, it found the other
adapter without a hitch.

..."

This should be simpler than recompiling the kernel or fixing the driver,
and easier than buying a _different_ 2nd NIC.

Here's hoping the next guy has an easier time with this than I did.

Regards, Steve

Subject: PPP error
Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 10:54:24 -0400

I recently upgraded one of my Linux boxes from RH 5.2 to RH 6.0, then
updated the kernel to ver. 2.2.12. This was the box I use as a gateway via
IPMasq, and now IPChains. After the upgrade I was getting the following
error in /var/log/messages when trying to establish a ppp connection :
Received bad configure-nak/rej: 03 06 cc ba 21 40

The connection would time out, then disconnect. This was working fine prior
to the upgrade. I've seen a few other posts with a similar message, but no
answers. The only other change I made was switching the dialout port from
/dev/cua1 to /dev/ttyS1. After switching back to the cua1 device the
connection completes without error. I was under the impression there was no
real difference between the devices, but that the cuaxx devs should not
really be used anymore. So, any idea what the problem is, and how I can get
it working using the ttySx devices ? TIA.

i dunno, but if you answer my question before i ask it, i'd find that a
bit ostentatious. i've been reading newsgroups since 1992, and i know
the "custom" goes back at least until then.

two things to watch out for if you use a 486 as your linux box:

1) does the bios allow you to set up the machine with one partition
larger than 503 mb? i wanted to put everything on my 3.2 gb hard drive
in one partition, but the bios wouldn't allow it, and i had to set up 4
partitions.
2) put the ip addresses of your win9x machines in the /etc/hosts file.
if you don't, it takes a long time to connect via telnet/ftp to the
linux box.

i used redhat 5.0 and have not regretted it at all.

Hello,
Does anyone have any practical experience of using the rtl8139.o
precompiled kernel modules (redhat 5.1)? I very new to networking so I
don't know that I have even got the driver installed and set up
correctly. Information on the following would be useful:
-How to isntall the module
-Once installed, how to check its funcionality / configure it
-A good place to look for information on the set up required on a win95
machine (dlink card) / linux box regarding ip addresses, hosts.conf
files etc.

Subject: Problem getting direct serial PPP connection from WinNT to Linux
Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 16:40:29 +0200

Hi,

I'm having problems getting a direct serial (null modem) connection between
a
Win NT (client) and Linux box (server).

What I do is:

on the Linux box:
pppd -detach 19200 /dev/ttyS1 19200 crtscts lock

on the NT box:
start "Dial-Up Networking" with the direct serial line as a "modem"
(connection to another NT box works)

After that, on a serial line analyzer I see the garbage coming from
the Linux box. But no response from the NT box except the "word"
"CLIENT" repeated five times.
Then pppd stops and the NT box shows me an error message box.

Has anybody any idea how I can get the Linux box answer that "CLIENT"
message or how I can get the NT box to skip it and start sending LCP
packets ???
I know that between two Windows machines the server answers with
"SERVER" and after that LCP config packets are exchanged.

thanks for any help

Gnter

I've got what I think is a similar problem:
a gateway machine with two known-good EtherExpress
NICs at distinct addresses, RedHat 5.2, and no way
I can seem to make the eexpress.o driver recognize
both NICs. The suggestions in the Ethernet-HOWTO
on passing multiple args to the driver don't seem
to work on eexpress for some reason. If anyone has
made this driver work with 2 NICs, I'd really like
to know how you did it...

Subject: Alias user in Linux or Samba?
Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 11:54:46 -0400

Hello there. I have three quick questions:

1. Is it possible in Linux (or Unix in general) to have two different user
names that map to the same user ID? For example, to have user1 be equivalent
to root, so they have distinct user names but the same user ID (number)?

2. Is it possible in Samba to map a network user to a Linux user? In other
words, when the W98 user user1 logs into Samba, it is mapped to Linux root
(for example, besides whether this is a good idea or not). I thought
/etc/smbusers is designed for this (it has entries like "root =
Administrator operator"), and smbadduser modifies that file when a new user
is added with unixid:ntid, but it does not seem to work. I'm using Samba
with encrypted passwords, I'm not sure if this has any bearing on the
matter.

3. Is it possible to tell Samba to use Linux passwords for the network
passwords. It is quite inconvenient to keep two sets of passwords for each
user (in /etc/passwd and /etc/smbpasswd). Again, I'm using Samba with
encrypted passwords, I'm not sure if this has any bearing on the matter.
Linuxconf has a setting "Synchronize Linux and Samba passwords", but I'm not
sure what this does, it does not seem to be doing anything. I'm using RedHat
6.0, by the way.

Thank you.

Subject: Which HOWTO
Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 15:09:31 GMT

I have a Linux box with two network interface cards. One of these will
connect to an adsl modem, and the other to a hub.

Which howto should I read? - firewall, proxy, masquerading, ip
chains ...

I only have a basic understanding of these terms, and would like the
easiest possible setup!

I use suse linux 6.1.

Thank you,
/Anders

The module fo the DLink DFE 530-TX is the via-rhine.o, you only need to do
the following: at any point of your system
      modprobe via-rhine.o
Next, in /etc directory edit conf.modules and insert
      alias eth0 via-rhine
Reboot you machine, and you should see some lines refering to your card,
it should work!!!

I had to start linuxconf and go to the mail setup area. There is a checkbox
that says something like Relay rules or something. I turned that on and
added our IP addresses into the relay allow by ip area.

For some reason I tried to restart sendmail but that didn't work so I
rebooted and that seemed to have solved my problem.

Subject: PPP - Hung Modem
Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 13:25:16 GMT

I was setting up ppp on one of machines when I hung a Sportster 33.6
Faxmodem. The "tr" light stayed on and would not reset. I then took off
a Sportster 56k and triied to get it going when I hung it. The same
problem. Eventually I got the 33.6 unhung but an unable to get the ppp
to initialize. My setting I am sure are correct. My question is there a
modem command besides ATZ and AT&F to reset the modem?
