You're right, NT's boot loader couldn't see the Linux partition on my
computer. However, to get it to work I had LILO install itself on the
Linux partition rather than the primary partition (it couldnt install on
the primary anyway because it's formatted NTFS). Then from within Linux
theres a way to pull the Linux boot off into a single file (bootsect.lnx).
There's documentation on the Linux CD about how to do this. Then just put
this file on the primary partition and add an entry in the boot.ini file
to load it.

Here's my two cents. To answer on the 5th ring add "s0=5" to your init

I don't know about the voice part of your question.

Did you apply the latest DHCPD? I upgraded yesterday from RH 5.2 (2.0.36) to
2.2.3 without any problems. I used :
http://charlotte.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/kernel-2.2/kernel2.2-upgrade-html
as my guide. I have a 3C515 card linked into the kernel (no modules) without
any problems.

Well, a hub is a hub, and they're all compatible with linux.
As for the network card, that's a bit tricky... just to be safe, I would only
buy ISA, and not PNP. Yes, I know there are people running PCI, and even I
myself am running a PNP NIC with the PNP turned off... but sometimes, it is not
possible to turn off PNP.

A (usually) sure bet is to call up 'Netgear' and ask if their cards are firstly
'linux' compatible (they may actually be able to answer this!) and if they say
that they don't know or not that they are aware of, ask them if it is NE2000
compatible. NE2000 is pretty much the standard for networking cards, although
linux does support others.

I had an identical problem and someone in this group explained that
ftp and telnet try to do reverse DNS lookups (I only experienced the
probelm when I was not connected outside my home LAN and thus had no
DNS). The suggestion - which worked fine - was to add entries for the
machines you are telnetting FROM to the hosts table.

Yes. I do get some information about the eth0 interface.

>configured anyway?

Configured? Like the IP addresses or IRQ or..?

IP: 192.168.1.4 (the rest of the network has 1,2, and 3 as last digits)
netmask: 255.255.255.0 (use it (of course) all over the network)
broadcast: 192.168.1.255
IRQ: 10
I/O: e100
as for the route thing I use this address: 192.168.1.0

If I give the ifconfig -a command I get a "dummy" object as well. (Good or
bad?)

>the LED's (if there are led's on the NIC), esp. when you run ping on the

My 3com 3c900 doesn't have any lights. If I ping the linux box itselft
(using IP 192.168.1.4) I get a "connection" (0.9 -0.5ms) which I have to
abort with ctrl-c. No problem.

One more thing. I've installed linux (Red Hat 5.2, kernel 2.0.36, (slackware
wouldnt install =(( ) on one of the win98 comps. (IP: 192.168.1.3) (The one
I'm using right now btw) I tried to ping the other linux box.. no good.. But
that card does have some lights on it. I'll check they flash next time. I
haven't got around to ping any other comp on the network yet. I'll do that
tomorrow.

With that install I can eliminate any problems caused by the Windows
configuration

I got my share of fun today when I installed linux on my win98 comp without
loosing any data =))

It may depend on what you mean by an "ADSL modem", but external ones

It works fine here. :-)

I had this same problem. What I found out is that if you already have a
default route going through your eth0 adapter, then pppd will not make a
default route, no matter what the command line parameters are.

What you need to do is remove the gateway and default route stuff from
your ethernet adapter's configuration.

So I read this RH5.2 and Cablemodem setup file out their on the net,
and it said that this was a very easy procedure. But I now have a eth0
device that will ping the assigned IP but nothing else. I am lost.
For debugging info this is what I have done:

System:

2 Ethernet cards one for Windows (AT2400/BT PCI which I don't think is
supported in linux) and one for linux (3com 3c509b ISA).

Linux is 2.0.36 kernel and has all the networking packages.

Gen Info

LiLo detects the 3c509 and I have put it on irq 11 base 0x210

I have set up these things in netcfg:

interfaces: eth0 IP(24.2.13.50) Default Gateway (24.2.13.1)

The following are some pipes from ifconfig and route:

I had a very similar problem with connecting our Win32 program to a RedHat
linux 5.2 system. Here is what I did to fix it.

Edit the file /etc/pam.d/rexec
and comment out the line:
auth required /lib/security/pam_securetty.so

I don't fully understand the reason behind this causing problems.
But it works for us.

Good luck.

I use OS2 boot manager to boot the following:

NT40WKS
NT40SVR
Win95
OS2 v4
DOS 6.22 (For Gaming)
LINUX (for laughs)

My sympathies also !

In my case one telnet program on Win95 connects and then disconnects
immediately with the Linux box

The standard windows telnet does this first time and then works
perfectlt the next.

What I am after is a step by step flow of what happens when
establishing a telnet session in order that I can troubleshoot it
myself !!!

I'd like to access my files in my linux across internet using Windows 98.
I've
tried Samba and it's great! However, it seems that Samba can only be used in
my
LAN environment instead of across the internet. Is there any solution for
this
or I have to use the NFS (or another protocol) instead?

  Need more info.
What kind of ethernet card is installed? Plug and Play? ISA, PCI? What driver
are you using?

Well, you'll have to load a driver for the NIC first.
