Subject: Please help with setup for 2nd block of ip's from isp
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 23:11:12 -0500

Hello.

My ISP (where my RAQ2 is co-located) first issued me one block of 16 IP
Addresses (they wouldn't give me more until those were at 50%+ utilization).
Now 2 weeks later I need more. They said they can issue me a 2nd block of
16 now, but I need to configure a "secondary IP" and another gateway on my
server.

How do I do this on the RAQ2 from cobalt running Red Hat Linux?

Actually just some direction using ANY version of Linux would be a start.

Following is the quoted e-mail from my ISP concerning this:

=======start of quotation=======
The Internet world allocates 'blocks' of IPs. I.e. a block of 8 a
block of 16 etc. You have a block of 16 Ips reserved for you.
However, there are several IPs that are needed for overhead
just to make the block work. One is used for the gateway, one
is used for the network address one is used for the broadcast
address, for a total of 3 overhead, leaving 13 to be used for
other things.

We have to justify our allocation of IP addresses to ARINs,
the American Registry for Internet Numbers. You are using
above 50% of your current allocation so I can issue you another
block of 16.

The range is xxx.xxx.xxx.224 - xxx.xxx.xxx.239.

xxx.xxx.xxx.224, 225 and 239 are overhead so the usable
range would be xxx.xxx.xxx.226 - xxx.xxx.xxx.238.

Netmask is the same (255.255.255.240), gateway is xxx.xxx.xxx.225. You will
need to specify a secondary IP address on your server and
a second gateway in order to utilize these new addresses.

=====end of quoted message=====

Please let me know how to make this work in Linux.

What a pain in the butt to have to do this each time I need 16 more IP's.
(actually only 13 useable ones each time too...)

Thanks in advance,

Joseph Honzik

since update from Kernel 2.0.36 to 2.2.10 (and from SuSE Linux 6.0 to 6.2
and of course from Samba 2.0.3 to 2.0.5a)
from the first all was running fine.
But after two days we get several problems. After an undefined time we get
on our workstations suddenly an
network- or file error (NT 4.0 WS SP5) and after restarting our program
(MS-ACCESS 97 Database) it works fine...
till the next network- or file error.

when we get the error the smb.log files says: (log level 2)

[1999/09/13 09:30:59, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_socket_data(507)
read_socket_data: recv failure for 4. Error = Connection reset by peer
[1999/09/13 09:30:59, 1] smbd/server.c:exit_server(406)
    Closing connections

does anyone how to correct this?

Thanks
Frank

Hi,

There is a program called neped.c which does this. Look for this

Subject: VPN with DSL and NAT router???
Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 05:31:26 GMT

Hi all,

We just got a DSl line and I'm looking to set up a VPN to allow remote
access to some of our users. These users will all be using Windows 95/98
machines and either have DSL or dial-up internet connections. Our network
is currently setup such that the DSL line connects to a Cayman router that
uses NAT and is then connected to a hub in our network. We then have a NT
server (yuck) that handles DHCP services for the workstations on our
network. My question is can I use a Linux box between the router and the
rest of the network to implement a VPN? Or should we discard this router
and use a Linux box to handle IP masquerading and VPN? We also need a
firewall in there too ... any tips on that?

thanks in advance,
tom

ps your help might get this part-time clown a full-time job if I can pull
this off ;)

Try setting the following options in your /etc/ppp/options file:
asyncmap 0
mru 576
mtu 576

What are the current entries in your /etc/ppp/options file?

If you are using kppp then under the setup-->PPP tab there is a box which
says Dock into Panel on Connect. Check that then when after the
connection is made there will be something that looks like two red and
flashing green headlights on the panel. Right click that and pull down
to details, it will list both local address and remote address.

I don't know if this is easiest or not but it is what I do.

Hello,

I want to tel-commute with using VPN. I have a gateway machine running
Linux, which connects to the Internet through a ADSL connection. I
installed an software application that does VPN at my side in my Windows NT
machine, which is behind the Linux machine. I found out I might be able to
connect to my company's servers using ipportfw. (IP Maquerading cannot.)
I rebuilt the kernel and installed ipfwd. Now I am trying to configure the
ipfwd with ipportfw, but when I type ipportfw -L, I got an error message
saying like proc/net/ip_portfw cannot be opened. The file doesn't exist in
there or any other directories.
When I rebuilt the kernel, I enabled port-forwarding.

Has anyone out here done this before?
Please let me know any info or hints that might be of help.
Thank you in advance.

Date: 14 Sep 1999 05:33:03 GMT

I recently set up another box to play with NetWare 5 (would be useful
knowledge for my job). The various Win9x boxen I have here talk to it just
fine with the client software provided by Novell. I've come up empty so far
in trying to get my Linux boxen (mainly a workstation running SuSE 6.1; I
also have a server running Slackware 3.6, but it's not as critical) to talk
to the NetWare box. Searching Novell's site turned up nothing useful. I
also checked Caldera's site since they're supposed to be tight with Novell
and there was some mention of their NetWare client for Linux being
open-source now, but I couldn't find that client anywhere. SuSE 6.1
includes ncpfs, but that only wants to work over IPX, and I have had zero
luck getting IPX to work (can't even use RCONSOLE from a Win9x box).
Besides, I'd just as soon keep my home network 100% IP. I also tracked down
a version of Samba that had been put together for NetWare 4.1x, but didn't
have much luck getting it running either. Does anyone know of a NetWare
client for Linux that works over IP-based networks?

When I installed Mandrake 6.0 on my computer, I skipped the installation of
my network card. Now I want to install it. Windows tells me that it is a
"3Com EtherLink XL COMBO 10Mb Ethernet NIC (3C900-COMBO)". After reading the
ethernet HOWTO, it seems like I have to recompile my kernel, and add the NIC
(as a module?). But I noticed that there is not an ethernet module in the
/lib directory called 3C900, or 3C905. Where can I download this driver
from? I tried the place listed in the HOWTO, but I got a permission denied
error. Is the 900 the same as the 905?

I too think, it's a Problem with the NIC. I use Samba on a P200 with an 3Com 3C900
(PCI) and get transfer rates up to 1MByte/Sec with a fully switched 10MBit/Sec
network. This was even higher than Linux-Networking using NFS until I changed NFS
configuration.

Logging in with Windows is straightforward; just use the dial-up program

I have no clue what to do after I am at the prompt.
Does anyone have any experience with these 3Com servers?

I followed your advice & download the socks5 package (it's a server +
client as well right?)

been reading how to install & run it but can't figure out 3 quarters of
what they're saying?
I did a
./configure --with-default-port=1080
--with-default-server=socks.qut.edu.au --with-default-version=5
--with-srvconffile=/etc/socks5.conf
--with-libconffile=/usr/local/etc/libsocks5.conf

without really knowing what will result.
I think i gotta set some env vars SOCKS5_USER & SOCKS5_PASSWD to use
runsock?
I did that but runsock ./ICQ still get any response. runsock xchat gets
a connection refused error - previously it just says "trying to connect"
& just blocks there. I guess runsocks is working to some extend but I'm
not in complete understand of the exact configuration process.

what am I missing out?

But not correct because x.x.189.192 is a net ip and not a card one.
As I see your broadcast you have to set an ip between x.x.189.193 and
x.x.189.254.

If you have a 2.2.x kernel the routing table is built automatically.
