Subject: FTP Question
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 01:10:00 GMT
I'm running an FTP server on a RHL machine, (FTP is: Version
wu-2.4.2-academ[BETA-18](1) )
I have disabled ftp and anonymous login.
1. How can I set it up so that access to directories is strictly limited?
2. How can I set it up so that I can FTP from a remote host into the RHL box
and retrieve files from a locally connected machine?

You can easily telnet in from a Windows box to your Linux machine using the
Microsoft Telnet and FTP clients; however, you'll be limited to 80x25 (or
80x43 or 80x50 if you set the CON mode). There's a remote X display called
VNC ( http://www.vmware.com) that works well for what you need to do. It
allows you to run full X applications remotely. The plus is that you can
also look at your Windows or Mac boxes from any machine.

Subject: Network performance
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 01:30:20 GMT
I recently set up a linux gateway with a cable modem. I have two win98
machines connected to the gateway. IP masq seems to work ok, all
machines can connect to the internet, but the performance is really
slow. Each machine works fine when connected directly to the cable modem
but connections through the gateway seem to be several orders of
magnitude slower. Are there any tools I can use to check network
performance? Any hints on what to check for? Here's my hardware:
Gateway:
RH Linux 5.2 with 2.2.3 kernel and all upgrades for 2.2
Home grown dual pentium tyan tc IV, 2 200MGHZ MMX
2 AT 1500 network cards using lance driver
DHST 5 port 10BT hub
Any help greatly appreciated
TIA

Buy a hub. Baring that, give each nic to your internal lan it's own
I.P. address, i.e. eth0 192.168.1.1, eth2 192.168.1.2, eth3 192.168.1.3.
Set your default routes accordingly and all should be happy, but do
yourself a favor and buy a cheap 10BaseT hub.

Subject: Card found but initialization delayed! Help?

My NE2000 card is specified in the conf.modules file with
...
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x280
On boot or ifup eth1 I see that it's found, but "Delaying ne
initialization." On boot it says this twice. In a previous install, it
worked. PnP disabled of course.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
