After much hair pulling over detecting my ethernet card, I come to you
guys :) I have a d-link DE-220 series pnp ISA ethernet card and on boot,
I get: eth0: no such device, I read the /etc/rd.c/rc.modules (hope I spelt
that right) and tried to find support for this card but the only d-link
suppor is for other types. However in the hardware support readme, it
says it supports my type. I also visited some web site quoted here for
ethernet card drivers, and found no support for my card... Could someone
point me in the right direction, as I need this machine to access the LAN.

Thanks in advance

Should be the same pinouts, I think.

> What kind of problems are you having?

Well, although I see some action in the Blinkenlichthen when I type at
commands at it through minicom, I get none of the documented
responses.

When I start minicom (even with an empty init string), the imodem
response is A0X0 or something similar (the machine is at home, I'm in
the office now, sorry). After that, no response, and typing AT
commands blindly (well, they do echo locally, but no linefeeds or
responses) seem to not produce any results whatsoever.

The host file is named 'host' in Windows directory, not 'host.smb'. I think
you name it wrongly.

Which machine is going to do the dialling? If it's the Windows box, you
need to tell *that* to dial out. If it's the linux box, then no: because
you won't be able to tell it do anything without first being connected to
it.

I would have thought it *should* work over PPP, yes...

I would suspect an IRQ conflict - do a 'cat' on /proc/interrupts and
ensure that there is a count for each NIC and that it is non zero. The
usual work around it to disable pnp on the offending card and set it
manually with the DOS utility you should have with the card.

Alternatively the conflict is causes by another pnp card taking the IRQ
allocated by the above method (eg a pnp soundcard). Use the BIOS to make
the IRQ unavaliable to pnp (on AMI BIOS the option is 'Legacy ISA'
against the IRQ in question).

System is RH6 2.2.5-22
It has a Realtek 8139 PCI NIC.

The IP part seems to go crazy after a while.
Can't telnet, ping or access the system in any way over the
network.

It's possible to log in at the console, but if you ping
other hosts, it complains about bad data being returned.

Thinsg come good again if you
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 up

and put a default route back in.

Is it the TCP/IP code that's the problem or the Realtek
driver?

TIA.

Hi all,

I'm trying to set up a dialin server for ISDN, but I only get it working
for WIN95 clients.
With a analog modem things are working allright for every client.....

When a WIN95 client logs in I can see the login name and password coming
in in the metty.ttyI0 log file, but with other clients username and
password doesn't seem to be transmitted, and the server tries to startup
/bin/login @.
With the same dialer (client) I can dial to other ISP's succesfull
though...

nb. I use CHAP as authentication protocol, and HDLC for ISDN.
Anybody any idea what I'm doing wrong here? Are there some good howto's
or FAQ's? I can only find info about ISP hookup's through ISDN.
Please let me know if you need more information...

On my own PC (runs X), I do a 'X -query <ip-adress or hostname>
:<display-number>
This starts up a new X session for another machine and so accomplishes that I
can switch between the desktops of different machines with Ctrl-Alt-FunctionKey.

I don't know if this is secure though.... (anybody?)

Assuming that you have a PC running DOS, with no CDROM, no modem, and no
LAN access,
then you have to fall back to floppy disk installation, or a pre-seeded
hard disk.
However, your floppy disk install can be small if your network card is
supported
in Linux, as the install can contain just enough to get Linux talking to
your LAN,
and continue the install from a file server on the LAN. IIRC, Slackware
comes with
a two-diskette LAN install package, meant just for this circumstance.
The other
big-player distros (Red Hat, Debian, Caldera, etc.) may also have such
an install.
There are also really small diskette distributions (the Linux Router
Project for one)
that give you a minimum Linux system with network capabilities.

In other words, so long as you have a diskette drive, a LAN, and a
carefully selected
Linux distribution, you should be able to install Linux on a completely
empty (sans OS)
system.

At least you use a text editor when you reply to messages...with gnus,
you're already in the editor. (Some would say that emacs is much more than
an editor; they're probably right. :-) )

As for a web browser...just what connection does it have to reading news?
You could read news with a web browser. You could also use a screwdriver to

I am having trouble with setting up a modem under linux (slackware
3.6)

and before anyone says anything - it is NOT a winmodem.

I decided to try the isapnp program because I didnt know what any of
the dip switches or jumpers did- no manual (I would greatly appreciate
information if someone else has this modem too)

I typed pnpdump >isapnp.conf and it finds it ok - I uncomment the bit
so it has address 3e8 and irq 4 ie. ttyS2
because I already have a io card taking ttys0 and 1

I also uncomment (ACT Y)
then I run isapnp isapnp.conf
it works ok.

I then try it out in minicom and it doesnt find it - cant type
anything to the modem !
Can anyone tell me whats wrong ? a conflict of some sort ?

You have to set your LD_LIBRARY_PATH=jdk1.2/jre/lib/sparc:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
Try it it should work. Or you can copy the needed libs in the /usr/lib or
/usr/local/lib anr run ldconfig.

Hi

I am interested in finding out whether anyone has had any success
implementing the NetWare emulator MARS-NWE on RedHat Linux 6.0.

I installed what I thought was the latest version although the
nwserv.conf file had 1996 at the top. I had the problem where I would
initialize the NIC with the ipx_interface command and then when I
rebooted the /proc/net/ipx_interface file would changed its values (not
the one I assigned it).

Are these the steps for installing and configuring MARS-NWE ??
1) make sure kernel supports ipx (how do you do this)
2) initialize the NIC as an ipx device
3) install mars and configure the nwserv.conf file

 are there any other steps??

Also where do you get the very latest stable version of mars?

Any advice would be helpful, thanks in advance.

If you are directly on the internet, why do you need a DHCP server? Is
your machine on a LAN?
I don't think this has something to do with how your DHCP server is
configured, but with how your network is configured....

[EMAIL PROTECTED] When we connect, we use a single account and all of

As for the local mails, I made some changes to the sendmail.mc file (or

First off, IPMasq is really pretty simple. The concept is that the
Masquerading server does the work for you... if you set up the kernel right
you should be just about done...
As far as the link light issue, though it's a shitty thing, some network
cards do require that you have an active hub ($40 will get you one, maybe
cheaper, dunno)... I've seen it on a couple different el-cheapo cards (I use
Linksys myself, they don't get much cheaper... but the lil bastards work
good.).
