NO, just very tricky. I've remotely admin'd hosts for months without seeing
them (once I had the initial setups right).

I don't understand what this means. If you set up your inittab entry right,
the server should survive terminal or cable problems quite well.

It depends on what you mean. To work entirely from a serial port (that's all
that Cisco's "special" port is), the BIOS needs to know about it. That's,
obviously, not a Linux issue. There are PCs with BIOSs that can boot from
serial ports, but they are rare (I've never actually seen one, but people
mention them on lists regularly). 

Newer Linux kernels can be configured with serial-console capability, and
ordinary inittab entries can provide a serial connetion for logins. This
helps once Linux has booted and init'ed, but not prior to that (it doesn't
help with the LILO bootloader, for example).

You will need to be a bit more specific about what you actually need/want to
get more detailed advice.
