Ach, surley  the following is MUCH quicker and a dam site easier.

tail -n 300 messages > messages.1 && mv messages.1 messages

There are other ways as well, now an idea here, i will say, "What could be
easier than that", sit back and wait for others to give you more examples.

Others, do not CC to me directly if you decide to send an example, one copy to
the list is enough.
