why not to try XFree86 4.0.3??? it has many fixes.
I have upgraded my old XFree 3.3.3 on SuSE 6.2 to 4.0.[23] without any
problems.
I used tarball distribution from XFree86.org - it was compiled without any
problem, and after installation I have everything running Ok.
I had the same problem with my ATI Rage Pro and XF4.0.2 - but after upgrade to
4.0.3 everything is running Ok.
