Then it must have been an oversight when you used xf86config.

/etc/lilo.conf is the place to look, comment out ;

message=/boot/message

Of course you must rerun /sbin/lilo, i would however use /sbin/lilo -t(est) to
test the configuration first, if there are no errors omit the -t.
