While I cannot comment usefully on the problems with the scripts that you discussed at the top of your message, I can note that the output of the standard commands you provided (ifconfig, netstat, iptables) indicates a working system. I also find that I cannot ping 206.73.20.40 (supposedly your ISP's nameserver) either, suggesting that either you have its address wrong -OR- your ISP has that server set not to respond to pings. Nor can I traceroute to it, which reinforces the "wrong address" interpretation.

OTOH, I *know* that my IP address (63.198.182.124) will respond to pings -- please try it and see if it works.
