Here's your problem. You must have a bios on that computer that has a date on or after July 1, 1989. If you don't have or can't get such a bios on that machine working happily it doesn't matter what you do with any usb technology it's simply not going to work for you. Many unethical computer vendors were installing usb equipment before July 1999 and if the owners of that equipment didn't manage to get their bios upgraded they still haven't got their usb equipment working to date.
