I use pine to compose and read mail. To retreive messages from a POP
server, you need to get something like fetchpop. There's actually a bunch
of different tools out there that accomplish the same task... I use one
called fetchpop. Fetchpop grabs the mail from the server and appends it to
your mail file in /var/spool/mail.

You can also configure Pine to access mail on the POP3 server on its own,
but your messages actually remain on the server, so you need to be online
to read them. The Pine FAQ (don't know the actual URL... it'd be
somewhere in the online help) details how to do this.
