What you are missing I think, is the env variable display.
With RH 5.1 / Xfree 3.2.2I have never needed this, but at
work Sun Solaris, DEC need the environment variable DISPLAY set

to check your environment variables
#env
returns
PATH=/.....
DISPLAY

etc.

To create a value for DISPLAY
#DISPLAY pcname:0
#export DISPLAY

Do another
#env
to check

To make permanent put these in .profile? as one line
DISPLAY pcname:0 ; export DISPLAY
