I am EXTREMELY newby but couldn't find answers to my problem elsewhere.
I'm using for the first time linux (redhat 5.1); Kernel version: 2.0.34
released in may '98.
The next problem happened to me after the first installation.
After this, I 'fdisked' my hdd. Format c: . And after re-installation,
the following problem happens again:

For the first few minutes, I could open accounts and login as a common
user not superuser.
I did shutdown with the command:
        # shutdown -r now
And no problem with this, but I guess (not for sure) the problem
appeared after using the command:
        # shutdown -r +5
After this:
When I login as root there's no trouble.
And when I open new accounts with:
        # useradd anyname
        # passwd anypass
linux tells me it's ok.
But I cannot login as 'anyname'. Receiving as answer:
System will shutdown on Mon Sep 7, 1998; at 14:48
        # login incorrect
        # login:
being 7/9/98, 14:48 the last shutdown date with '-r +5' parameters.
And -obviously- this date is gone and will never come back :)!
Of couse, I tried this several times, with different user names and
passwords and case matched perfectly.
Some other data:
* Linux 'creates' the /home/anyname directory. The problem is that I
cannot login as anyname.
* As linux tells me that:
System will shutdown on Mon Sep 7, 1998; at 14:48
I tried to use the command:
        # shutdown -c
to cancel any supposed shutdown pending log.
But linux tells me that:
        no pid(!?) records for shutdown
or something similar.
If it's a bug of actual redhat 5.1:
Is there any relation between the 'shutdown' message and the impossible
login?
Maybe the problem is related to my kernel version?
Should I download a previous kernel, even I have the newest?
Could I make any mistake during installation ? I guess not !
Sorry if my doubt is very 'elemental'.
TIA:
