The "simplest" is not always the "best".
The best must be, put back what LILO overwrote in the first place, this will
exclude any parculararitys which possably will arise by doing it your way.
Like i explaned in a previous post.
lilo -u /boot/boot.NNNN where NNNN is like boot.0300
The 0300 is the numeric name for which device lilo is on.
