Hiya!
i have also had this problem. I recently posted the fips question, btw, and
now think i have an answer.
I have 32Mb ram and a P200MMX. I have my linux native partition at 550Mb
and a swap partition of 72Mb (2 x RAM). I typed "free" and found i was not
using anywhere near my total ram and don't run anything very memory
intensive but basically installed linux to learn how to program and just
improve my general knowledge.
Now there are two options as i see it (which isn't very clearly, really...):
if your swap partition is quite large and you have a lot of RAM
1: you could repartition your swap to two smaller ones and make one the
swap and use the other one. This is quick and easy. also, swap partitions
are a bit quicker (but who notices these these, really?) than the other
option below.
2: Chenge your swap partition two a normal linux ext2 partition and then
make a smallish swap file on it. the good thing about this is you can
change its size reasonably easily, but the bad thing is it is a bit slower.
I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people out there who will give better
info. (i am probably wrong on one or two counts but it is all about
learning...) hehe.
i will be checking up on these options for myself but will probably go for
number 1, as i don't really use my linux side for much other than
programming and playing around with. if i end up needing more space i will
probably just buy a small secondhand HDD.
hope that helps,
