Sorry but they are compatable, you must have done something wrong.
Assuming you have the patches in /usr/src still gzipped what happens
when you type

 'gzip -cd patch-2.0.33.gz | patch -p0' 

You will of course need to patch against a "clean" source tree.

You should be able to copy it from any cdrom.
