What do these lines in /var/log/messages mean?

Hi,

Just out of curiosity, what does the following line in my 
/var/log/messages mean?

Sep 27 03:44:33 localhost gated[148]: EVENT Add lo 127.0.0.1/255 
<Broadcast Loopback>

Also, who is the user 'news' as in:

Sep 27 04:01:02 localhost PAM_pwdb[411]: (su) session opened for user 
news by (uid9)
Sep 27 04:01:03 localhost PAM_pwdb[411]: (su) session closed for user 
news
