Logging in as root, you can go to the /var/log directory and remove wtmp.
Then recreate it with 

touch wtmp

This produces a zero-length wtmp file that will commence accumulating log
in information again.  I don't know if the xferlog file works the same
way.  But you might rename it temporarily and try.  Be sure you have 
rescue floppies ready if you try this experiment.  I don't _know_ that
anything will happen, but its never a mistake to be too careful.
