Scott,
If you are interested in what applications are available for LINUX, here are
a number of websites that you might be interested in:
www.redhat.com/linux-info/Software/Applications
www.a-o.com/jordan/
stommel.tamu.edu/~baum/linuxlist/linuxlist/node4.html
sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/
(there is a note about using sunsite.unc.edu: "Please use
a mirror of the site. Traffic becomes very heavy at
times and can bog down the link. A list of mirrors are
available at http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/MIRRORS.html
).
As for CAD packages, I have seen some in the ftp boards I have surfed, but I do
not use one full time in my work; therefore, I cannot recommend one to use.

Subject: CAD
I am getting my father interested in Linux and he loves the concept but
is hesitant to jump in because he is an architect and needs a CAD
program to draft. He really resents that CAD programs are so expensive
and have such a strangle hold on the market (sounds like a certain group
based in Redmond, Washington:)
Has anyone heard of anyone porting anything like a CAD program to Linux?
