I used a trident 8900 for 3 years and never experianced any problems right
from the (my) start, 1.0.9 up and till 2.0.25 +/-.

Reinstalling linux is NEVER a solution for this sort of thing, 99.9% of the
time faulty configuration is the cause, mostly on the operators side,
including mine, yes i too have had core dumps, X locking up, netscape totaly
failing and spitting abuse at me and everytime it has been an "operator
error".
I now have an S3 card, it caused me a lot of problems at first after moving
on from the trident 8900.
