I have been having problems with system lock ups in XFree86 and KDE while
running Netscape 4.05 and StarOffice 4.0 sp3. I believe that I have
eliminated the Netscape problems by adding the -install modifier to the
command line, but I still have frequent crashes in star office (How
frequent? I reboot and use Office 97 when I need a more "stable"
environment...) Usually the system locks up completely, and I have to do
a cold boot to get it going again, but sometimes star office just kills
itself. I have tried starting X using:
# startx --bpp 8 (Is this the right syntax?)
and switching down to 800x600 resolution, but these don't seem to help.
Relevant system info:
AMD K6-2 266, 48MB RAM, 51MB swap
S3 Trio 32 video card, 2MB RAM

TIA
