Hi Phil:
With regards to the FTP program, try FileRunner - it is a very good
X-Windows program that provides a File Manager like interface. It allows
you to browse directories on your local drives as well as connect to
remote systems via FTP and browse (and transfer files) as though they were
local.
There is a version of Netscape that runs under Linux; I'm not sure if the
composer part is there but the browser certainly is and it works good too.
With regards to compressing and uncompressing files, you will need two
tools: tar and gzip. tar is used to collect a bunch of files into one
large file. Then, you would use gzip on that large file to compress it
(gzip is also used to uncompress: use the -d option).
As far as office productivity tools, look into ApplixWare and StarOffice.
I haven't used or even tried either one but I've heard that they exist.
Good luck
