Ideally, you make your firewall the only machine directly visable to the
outside world.  Your router (if it is a seperate box from the firewall)
would normally go immediately behind the firewall, and the rest of your
network off that.  Something like:

  ---------------------------------------------
 |                    INTERNET                 |
  ---------------------------------------------
                          |
                       Firewall
                          |      
                        Router
                        | | | | 
                   ----------------------
                  | Rest of your network |
                   ----------------------

The router and firewall are often combined into one box, and any number of
variations on this basic theme are possible.
