At my last visit to the semi-annual local computer fair,
I found thin-ether-net (BNC) cards for $1.00 (USD) each.

 This may be cheaper than 2 serial cards.

 Finding ethernet drivers and terminal software for a 80286
might be the more difficult hoop to jump through.
