Joaquin,

There are two ways of getting to a newer kernel : patching an old one and
then building it, or directly building the entire source. If you have
downloaded the entire source, you dont have to do the patching step.
Generally, patch files have the string 'patch' somewhere in their names and
can vary (gzipped) in size from a few kb to a few hundred kb.

The kernel source is not installed by default in Redhat. All that is
installed by default will be the kernel headers.

If you are going the 'patch' route, you need to get the source rpm for
the kernel installed. This is usually on the second cdrom. Installing this
rpm will cause the gzipped files to be copied over into /usr/src/redhat. Once
the files have been unzipped and untarred, you should have a directory
beginning with 'linux'. In this directory, you will find a 'README' file that
will tell you all you need to know and more about how to build linux.

If you have the entire source (and are not doing a patch), I would
recommend renaming any /usr/src/linux to another directory and then unzipping
and untarring the source in /usr/src. Now follow the instructions in
/usr/src/linux/README.

Regards,
Kenneth
