RAID HW supported by Linux

I would like to put together a RAID system under Linux.  Which RAID
adapters are supported and which are highly recommended?
Also, which version of the kernel do I need?  Can I get by with the
2.0.xxx or do I have to go with the experimental 2.1.xxx ?
