amd is the automount daemon. it automatically mounts filesystems, and
devices such as your cdrom and floppy. man amd for details.
as for the "innd...no such pid" msg, 'seems the inn daemon died
prematurely. when the Kxxnews script in rc6.d issued the killproc
pid command, it produced that mesg 'cause it couldn't find "innd.pid"
under /var/run/news. the file was removed when you killed innd.
