xisp setup (general ppp question)

I've had some sucess getting connected to my isp with xisp. The 
modem will dial the right number, the login prompt and password 
prompt are answered, but instead of receiving an assigned ip, a 
string of wierd characters continues in what appears to be an un-
ending sentence.
