I'm have never used xisp before, never heard of it, but what is sounds
like is it could be a terminal program, and those wierd chatacters are (in
most programs) probably ppp trying to 'handshanck' into a ppp session.

If it is just a termnail program trying exiting it, without reseting the
modem and then try pppd /dev/modem to start the ppp daemon . You would
need to config it if you haven't already, the /etc/pppp/options file and
the /etc/rc.conf file.

If it is a dialer/ppp program I don't know if I could help. If it is, one
thing you may want to look for is a settings that tells it when to start
the ppp session when it see the 'this' string.
