    Well here is how I do it:

After compiling the kernel, I copy the files zImage, and loadlin.exe to the root
dir on my DOS partition. Then by typing   'c:\loadlin.exe zImage /dev/hdb3 ro'
from a DOS prompt, it boots my Linux system on hdb3. 

 I have incorperated the above command in a batch file, so I can boot Linux from
the DOS prompt by simply typing the batch name. Also, I have written my
config.sys to present me with a menu to start DOS or Linux.
