You can either fix the error if possible, or prevent "fsck" checking it. The
"fsck" command that is ran at startup should be in one of the rc files, it's
"/etc/rc.S" on my Slackware, but YMMV.

Typically, yes. Some programs, normally CD playing programs, may need to be
reconfigured as they may access the drive directly and would be rather upset
when they can't find it. You may need to relink "/dev/cdrom" to the new device
as well.

If you have the cash, sure. ;)

Damages on a hard disk may sometime propagate across the disk, you may want to
take that into consideration when deciding.
