GNOME(GNU Network Object Model Environment) is a desktop manager
check http://www.gnome.org and http://www.kde.org

GNUStep ?!, the only time I have come acros it is as a directory for
AfterStep and WindowMaker.

no gnome runs on the WM, according to BYTE it is supposed to bring
'order' to the Linux desktop and make it easier for us newbies.

a cautious yes

bingo!

u need the files to run GNOME on top of your WM, I believe the GNUStep
refers to a relation between the WM and GNU, again I am not sure.

Basically, GNOME is a desktop to make X easier, supposedly very useful
and runs on 'top' of the WM (there may be some restrictions wrt the WM)
it competes with another desktop manager called KDE.

GNUStep is the directory in which AfterStep and WindowMaker reside, it
is not a Desktop Manager and does not conflict with GNOME.

Hope that helped - check the web pages i listed.
