If you had have uninstalled 'lilo' before deleting linux then you should not
have had any problems.
As far as i know all distributions install lilo with the -s option as
default, which copies the old /mbr to /boot/boot.NNNN, its this file which
the -u option copies back to the /mbr which sould allow the origanal dos
version to be used once again.
Of cource this is possably of no help to you now, but handy to know for
further referance.
