OK... Here's another question from a stupid teenager using Linux...

How on earth do I install fonts??? I downloaded the fonts that are
available from ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/fonts/freefonts-0.10.tar.gz and
ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/fonts/sharefonts-0.10.tar.gz. I then gzip -d on
both of them, then tar -xvf on both of the resulting .tar files. As
always, I got the directory structure of the fonts.

All of the fonts extensions are .pfb, and the only directory that I seen
these files in /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/Type1. So, what I did was this:

        mv ~/sharefont/* /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
        mv ~/freefont/* /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/Type1

Now, I had heard something before about having to run mkfontdir next to
properly install the files. When I did this, nothing happened, and it
just quit back to the prompt. I am running this as root, and this is
what I typed:

        mkfontdir /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/Type1

I checked the fonts.dir file (according to the man page, mkfontdir is
supposed to update the fonts.dir file) to see if it had changed-- and it
had not. It still only had the 16 fonts that came with my Red Hat Linux
(a mix of *.pfa and *.pfb files)...

Now, I'd like to be able to use these additional fonts, and I can't.
Why is this not working for me, and how can I get it to work for me???

        Thanks,
        Mike
