I have Netscape Communicator 4.05 under RedHat 5.1, and I had a similar problem:
I put in Preferences - On startup, launch Messenger Mailbox, but, on startup,
Netscape was running Navigator with /usr/doc/HTML/index.html page. I put in
/usr/bin/netscape file the line:
HOMEPAGE=""
instead of:
HOMEPAGE=/usr/doc/HTML/index.html
Try to modify this script, if you have it.

Hope this helps,
Cata.
