I believe this is a known bug in the X server. You could try upgrading to
the latest version (3.3.?).

Yes - sortof. As I understand it, you can effectively do this by
installing glibc and a set of libc libraries that are just wrappers for
glibc. There are rpms around that do this (for Redhat 5.x) which might be
worth looking at.
