Hi Gene,
I know what you mean when you say there are dozens of files
to download. The easiest way I found was to go to the local bookstore or
computer shop and buy a cdrom with a distribution on it. Most people I
know use redhat 5.1, it isn't any better, just common with the people I
know. Anyway, there a lots of books out there that have a cd with some
tips, although with a user group like this you may not really need the
book, but they are good for quick reference.
If you have a really good connection, you can just download the images
that make the boot disks, then you can do an ftp install. Each
distribution uses different images disks though, so you should choose a
distribution before you begin. If you know anyone who uses linux, pick
the distribution they use, as you bug them with questions later on : )
